Media Player works fine, can open the .m3u file if u want it to be a playlist ( IE play like a CD ). Or use winamp. Or indeed pretty much any program ;)
Hoowever, sounds to me like u might be confused by the original .rar file? It's a .rar file, you should probably use WinRAR ( www.rarlabs.com ) or another capable archive util.

If you use a Mac, you can just use StuffIt Expander or UnRarX [both work really well, although UnRarX works better I find...]
It would have been funny if you'd made these a bin/cue of Ogg Vorbis audio files.

my only question is leigh outrages mix quieter. it may be how i have used winrar or something but it is not as loud as the other two mixes i run my tunes through my stereo so its noticeable if i flip between them |

Or you can just drag into Nero ( etc ) and have 2 second "gap" on track 1, then 0 second on the rest. Will achieve the same.
.cue file is easier, though, I suppose.

Exactly, its a an awesome compilation but a little disappointing the volume levels on Leighs mix aren't as higher quality as mixes 2 and 3! Cue files make it so much easier to burn to CD as well, makes for perfect gaps and I'm sure a little more friendler on some, if not most portable MP3 players.
A great release but personally, cue files, one single MP3 for each mix and equal volumes for each mix would be perfecto!
Perhaps next time, but as Phenex says above, if there is any chance I'll be stoked as well ;)

Yeah, IMO a split compilation only gives you problems since it gets a lot harder to burn the mix properly.
Thought that instead of moaning more, I should probably help putting my point across :)
For winamp users, there's a plugin called mp3cue http://www.guerillasoft.co.uk/mp3cue/, which allows you to listen to a mp3 with a cue file and jump between the songs, kind of like winamp's list works with the split up tracks, except you don't have a gap (although in all fairness winamp's latest version supports gap-less playback, but burning is still a problem).
Also, should you ever want to split the tracks up (e.g. for your mp3-player), you could always use musiCutter http://musicutter.szm.sk/, which splits MP3s with a cue-file nicely.
That's my arguments for it :) Hope I convinced some of you, at least :P |

Its a lot easier to work with a single MP3 rather than a pre-cut mix.
Most scene rippers rip to a single MP3 with cues, its pretty much standard.

The issues with loudness consistency between the mixes could have been easily solved by having someone master the three mixes. Obviously this was a free album, so there is no budget to pay for 'pro' mastering, but even someone with basic knowledge could at least get the loudness consistent between the three.
Also, one issue with splitting up the tracks in mp3 form is that mp3 encoding inserts a small bit of silence at the start of each file. Fortunately it was short enough in this case to not be much of a problem, but it's still not ideal. I would prefer to see one full mp3 file for each mix, and then a cue file for people who want to burn to CD with track markers (I think this might have been mentioned above).
Cool to see the project come to fruitition anyway!

Wikked compilation.
I loved Darwins cd and Bounce's cd. Im sorry to hear about the Darwin cd though!. It was such an innocent free project until people do this sort of thing and complain about it.
Anyway I must say again, fantastic compilation. I would be happy to have paid $30 for it, I thought it was that good. Really up to scratch. |

Wav = Full, high quality audio file.
MP3 = Compressed audio file.

You need to explain yourself better in the future then. Instead of trying to correct yourself afterwards after people have pointed out glaring errors in your posts. It makes you look even sillier
And a wav or 320mp3 would still be better in the circumstance you have listed above as there would be less compression on the recording of the mix. |

actually there is really no difference in audible quality, as the accepted 'equivalence point' (not sure if correct terminology :p) of mp3 format is roughly 192 kb/s, and deffinately by 256.
As for 320 mp3>cd...
they cant really be compared as they are two completely different technologies, one using bits and the other wave frequency. cd's are usually sampled at 48khz, which true audiophiles bitch about due to poor quality at higher frequencies, and would rather sampling e performed at 72 or 96 khz. but these audiophiles are also the ones that use valves and gold wiring for their 1337 systems instead of copper and an integrated circuit as they give 'a better sound'.
i.e. cd pwns mp3
as a side the korn album follow the leader is the only one that i know of that is sampled above 48khz - at 72 khz |

I think DJ Square was saying that the source was 128kbps MP3s, so it doesn't matter if they make the mix 320 or WAV since the source still is 128kbps. That is: upsampling won't increase the quality.

You're pretty far wrong by what you've said on a number of counts.
- CD Audio only supports one sampling rate, 44.1Khz - this is defined in the Phillips Red Book Specification which defines what a Audio CD must be.
- Double Blind Testing (ABX) generally certifies that /most/ people cannot distinguish between 44khz / 96khz. Sampling at higher frequencies does assist with the mastering process, but the end product is almost always 44.1khz CD Audio.
- Ogg Vorbis is a mature and stable format that aims to address the need for a patent-free audio codec for general use. It uses similar strategies to MP3 to achieve compression efficiency (psychoacoustic modelling, FFT/DCT), but of course isn't as widely used in software and hardware. Using the latest compiles of LAME Mp3 encoder with VBR presets will enable the best results, and Ogg Vorbis' has a custom encoder called AuToV which is very optimised for audio quality also. It's generally accepted that LAME is the best Mp3 encoder available.

hey guys, I was about to download these mixes but I realised it was in some strange format and I can't open it on my computer. Do I have to download a special program or something?

Missed downloading it. Been removed "cos of problems". Is what people have been saying "crush on hardcore 2" due for release in october a brand new album or they mean disk 2?

Darwin's mix has been pulled permanently unfortunatly.
Crush on Hardcore 2 is whats in the pipeline for the next installment. There was a post about it and even reported on the top page of this site if you want more info. |
