An absolute genius throughout his career, innovating music one way or another both on and off the record. His sounds paved the way for generations of inspired music, yet it never lost it's value and is probably as listened to now as it was back then. I watched The Martian yesterday, and David Bowie's Starman featured. The Olympic opening ceremony march was peaked with Heroes being played when Team GB emerged. The BBC has named two shows after his songs, making them integral parts of the series' contexts. And just two days ago, he released his 25th studio album.
Bowie was also pivotal in changing the UK perception of homosexuals and bisexuals even though he himself didn't seem certain. However, that declaration seemed to break a certain taboo. His public image of androgyny drew a lot of attention, and that probably went some way to desensitize our society to homosexuality and bisexuality (whereas in the US it apparently caused him a lot of problems in his career). Music in the 80's seemed to swing this way en masse and Bowie's high profile nature probably gave it a lot of momentum. Therefore his influence in society is probably far larger than most would think.
I've been alive a fraction of his career, but my dad was an avid fan. His Bowie collection was huge, and his passion for the music was probably a reason why my endearment to music is so powerful. So this thread is to celebrate a true influence, an innovator and a pioneer. Rest in Peace, Ziggy

I wonder who's waiting for me to say something stupid again? :P
anyways...
Your dad's collection WAS huge? Doesn't he have anything left by Bowie then?

It's all still here. Poor grammar on my part. Must be dozens of CD albums and I know there's hundreds of vinyl in the roof.
I'll have to start digging it out. It's classic stuff.
