Elipton I've found myself dedicating a notepad to documenting samples that I might use for music from audiobooks, films, programmes, radio shows and various other places. What I have now is pages upon pages of quotes phrases and sounds which I've been integrating into my music.

Does anyone else do this?
Alex BassJunkie yup, a while back when i was starting it never triggered in my head when i would hear stuff i could use, but now if i'm watching tv and a good quote comes up, my brain automatically thinks 'hey, thats a good sample for a track'

Also, i do try to find samples equivalent to their counterpart, for example, if i wanted a clap, i'd look for a wierder sound that sounds similar, like crashing glass, gunshot, and mix it with the clap to make a unique and less generic sound.

Similar with most samples i think, i try to find that little game changing sound to make a normal sample sound better.

I think the last one i had was 2 days ago when i heard the american horror story intro music, i think you probably know the sound i mean hehe

Its good that you do that, because it shows that you have plenty of imagination and creativity (even though they aren't your samples, it's knowing you're having these ideas which is a progression in imagination, creativity etc)
Triquatra yes
SpiritWolf Oh yeah, I've watched stuff for the sole purpose of finding some samples (and sometimes you get entertained as well :P). I've sampled everything from documentaries on psychics to US presidential campaign ads. I always find it more fun than using the same samples everyone has used to death and it makes your tracks stand out more.
Dys7 I've been meaning to, but honestly I never see any. Im not big on various media, so I never really seem to find anything.
djchexmixer Yes, definitely. I use my phone for notes all the time on sample ideas.

"Damn, that would sound cool in a song." Followed by writing it down along with a some rough idea for the song / sound I have in my head.

In fact, I am working on a song right now from using this process. I heard something while driving and inspiration struck, collected the samples, and got to work.
Elipton You have samples that you can imagine in music, and because you do this you imagine the music around the sample. In just a couple of seconds you've imagined up a new concept for a track.

^Yes. It happens all the time and has become tiresome because one life is insufficient to produce it all. :-/

that beats jumping up in the middle of a dvd, popping it in the pc, trying to find exactly where it was, ripping the audio, then settling back to watch the rest... after finding the exact same part again to watch from.... i did this with an episode of fringe a while back lol

the notepad idea sounds much better, but i bet i'd never get around to ripping it unless i did it there & then.
dj-freedom No but now you mention it that seems like a bloody good idea! Especially if you have a shit memory like me lol
Audio Warfare I either make a mental note (and probably forget half) or rip it there and then. In hindsight a notepad would be a good idea.
Cyrax All the time

I was watching Masters of the Universe (1987) Dolph Lundgren film , thought the way Skeletor was speaking would fit perfectly into a gabber track , originally I wanted to use the part where he says :

" I feel it, the power... fills me. Yes, I feel the universe within me! I am... I am a part of the cosmos! Its energy flows... flows through me. Of what consequence are you now? This planet, these people - They are nothing to me - the universe is power, pure, unstoppable power - and I am that force, I am that power, I am more than man, more than life! I am a god! Now. You... will... kneel! Kneel!

Unfortunately there is background music playing over the top of it and even though decent producers can get rid of the background music the cost is the sample loses its impact.

In the end I used a different part in this

Could always record it yourself or get a mate to record it? Failing that you can get a voice actor to do a short line like that for peanuts.

I didnt think of that , My voice is way to girly though

Audio Warfare Pitch it down a bit, makes a world of difference. :)
masterbucks My phone's notepad has loads of info in it of film quotes, tv lines etc that crop up and slips into a 'That'll be good for a end of bar fill' idea.

One in particular I'm looking forward to chucking in a track is from the film Horrible Bosses, with Jennifer Aniston saying 'I want you to F*** my slutty little mouth'

I try to write down what time in the film or tv episode these snippets appear at but I haven't with this one.
I used some excellent EVIL DEAD samples in a track this year, some of the SFX in track were ripped and processed from the film too.
