As many as it takes to make it sound just 'right'. I've got about a dozen unfinished tunes on my hard-drive that I've been toying with for about a year and they still don't sound right. My excuse: I'm waiting for the right samples to just fall into my lap :P

The amount of hours is irelevant, you could put a year into a track and i would still be a load of rubbish so there you go :)
And of course the length of time to make a track depends on your skill :)

Depends... I know this:

System F spent 8 hours on "out of the blue"
Nick from Blaze! / Bang! wrote Shooting Star in 30 mins...

I know other people that took 7 days to write a track but it was worth it...

theres no real limit, you can spend 20 minutes on a song an it can be the best you ever wrote, then spend 8 hours on one and its absolute gobshite. most of the time taken by pro's is tweaking synths, adding effects, messing with envelopes, etc etc. if theres no fx an its all just presets, write the tune an your sorted

If Barbie is so popular, why do you have to buy her friends?

... or you can spend 20mins on a song, realise on playback that it *doesn't* sound anything like the next 'Shooting Star'- or 'Power of Love'-style anthem that you had imagined it was gonna be, bin the module, stash the samples somewhere so you'll never find them again and go back to sinking beers for the remainder of the day.

*sigh*
