im gettin into djin trance and such and i was wondering how come ppl dont like belt drive n i would like 2 kno what is good to start out with belt or dircet drive in a resoable price range for about 400 ive beeen lookin at numark gemini and stanton packages some 1 please let me kno what the big deal is and ur suggestions thanx alot

The problem with belt drives is that they lack any torque on the platter. When you apply any pressure with your hand, the platter stops spinning. This makes cueing the record and releasing on beat a daunting task indeed.

you can't hold a mix on belt drives,mixing on belts is a different kettle of fish to mixing on directs. on belts you're forever focusing on keeping the records cued whereas on direct drives you're looking to find the perfect pitch and holding the mix

The difference is that belt drives are toys and direct drives are real turntables.
If you're looking for the real difference though, it's just as it sounds: On a belt drive, the motor is off to the side and the platter is powered by a belt. On a direct drive, the motor is coupled directly to the platter.
You can sorta picture in your head the difference in quality...

I couldn't agree more. Belt-driven tables are tinker toys and Technics are like badass samurai machines...it's like comparing a Lamborgini Diablo to a '73 Pinto hatchback. Not everyone can afford a Lamborgini (i.e. Technics), but at least get something dependable. I had belt-drive tables for almost 2 years before buying Technics. I kinda' wish I would've at least had direct-drive. I hear the Geminis are decent and I've used 'em.
Oh, and do yourself a favor and spin hardcore instead of trance ;) Just a suggestion.

defintely direct are much better than belt as u have inatsnt stop on the belt drive an the platter is in constant flow instead of mechanism.

thanks guys im look at the battle back from numark what u guys think of that its about 250-600 us dollars and thats what i was thinking of gettin its direct drive tables n 2 channel mixer please let me know ur thoughts on that

dj kayos...I would save up for the Technics or another comparable set of decks...it's worth the wait to start off on the right foot.

If you think you can save up that much money I would agree and say get the Technics...and if you know you'll be truely commited. Not everyone sticks with this. Otherwise get what you can to learn on for now.

Belt drives actually have a belt to turn the record plator - like a fan belt in a car and just like a fan belt in a car it can come off, snap or generally cause problems. They are not recommended for DJing because when you apply pressure to the plator the belt will start to slip and might come off, this is the same for scratching as well... belts are just for your father to listen to his 70's tunes.

NOOOO!!!! DONT EVER BUY NUMARK!!! BUY THE GEMINI EQUIVALANT!!! My mistake when I got started was I bought Numark. Within a week the mixer was shot to hell. Literally. The volume fader came off in my hand. I still use the turntables though :(. They suck the pitch faders are horrible once you get a good mix going it slips rather quickly. NO I DON"T SUCK AT DJING SO DON"T SAY THAT IS WHY MY MIXES SLIP :). So basically buy Gemini, Vestax, or Technics. I recomend gemini since your just starting out :).
I used to be a raver, used to take lots of E. Now I just smoke weed, and you know I will Succeed. :)
