As long as u know the basic principles you are set. DJ'ing is an easy concept, but very very diffuclt to put into practice. Aseveryone has said, practice, practice, and damn well practice.

You have to be determind to succeed, because if your not u'll get put off easily. Record your sets/mixes + listen them, at the start u'll concentrate so much on it you won't even notice if you make a rocking mix! If you do have a bad day and can't get anything right, make ure self feel better by messing around on the decks! (trust me it helps! :D)

I've been doing it for a mere seven months and hopefully soon I'm going to step up to playing at a friends party, so basically as mouse said, don't expect to be instantly great.

Have fun, and good luck :)

EDIT: Almost forgot, this is pretty useful => http://www.recess.co.uk/beginning.html

True, the concept of perfection is in a way alien to an activity such as DJ'ing, as there can be no such thing as a "perfect" outcome (set), the quality thereof being as dependent on subjective factors as it is that it is almost impossible for any set to be unanimously deemed "perfect".

However, with practice comes technique, and the perfection of technique is a useful foundation upon which to create a masterpiece of expression.

Discuss.

yeah there is certainly a technical side to dj'ing (beatmatching, scratching etc etc) but there is certainly an 'x factor'.

You have so much freedom of what tunes to use, what to mix into mix - where are u going with you set? I mean you can just randomly dig into your record box and get something, but more and more when I'm practicing I'm thinking 'I can use these songs to build up to this, the change to this etc etc'.

I suppose somepeople would argue about it, but it is possible to have a technically great dj, who is crap. i.e. they beat match perfectly but they just play all the same style of music, with no variation, no build up and no origonality :)

there is also a lot of room to play around with the technical stuff, mix it on the off beats for a little excitment, timing when the melodies come in, and messing around with the eq's. so far the only technical thing of djing is getting the beats in sync, and that is to where you want them to be.
