There is renewed interest for the state of Catalonia to seek independence from Spain, and honestly they have more of a right than Scotland does. If you don't know where Catalonia in Spain is, it's on the southeast side of the country. Their most famous city is Barcelona, which hosted the 1992 Summer Olympics. The state is also the location of Lloret De Mar, where HTID ITS has taken place all these years, and a lot of other beach towns that are very popular among European tourists. So they have a strong tourist economy that has helped them fare far better than the rest of Spain, especially Madrid, during the country's economic crisis.

There's never not been big interest in independence in Catalonia. The difference is Spain will just lol and ignore them.

Catalonia has wanted independence for a while. It's the exact reason Spain said from the off that they'd veto Scotland's entry into the EU. They don't want to encourage devolution for the their own country's unity.

Ahhhh, the city which hosted the '92 Olympics. I didn't have a clue what Barcelona was until you mentioned that.

I just wanted to make sure you didn't get it confused with Barcelona in Cornwall.

So the vote happened and even though it doesn't count, people still came out to vote on the symbolic referendum.
