iv been using the free gate vst 'stereo sidechain gate' to do a gating effect. its the gray one im sure most of you know it.
(its here if your not sure what i mean http://www.kvraudio.com/get/1617.html )

basically iv been using it to do a fast gate effect on a bassline (4 times per beat) in an oldskool track.
but im getting a clicking on it that sounds not nice at all.
i tried changing the sidechain gate signal from a kick to a snare and this helped a bit.

iv tried playing round with the knobs for quite a while too but cant get rid of it.

is it a problem with my computer getting a bit bogged down, or is it something i am doing wrong?

anyone got any tips or advice? much appreciated

frank

I've never used that particular VST but setting the attack and/or the release too short will have that effect i'd have thought so check those settings first. It would be helpful if you had an mp3 clip.
If you think it's your compute speed then try it in a new project where there is no demand on the CPU just to test it, or check the VST Performance meter (assuming your using Cubase).

As Hard2Get said adjust the attack and release times. I had a sidechain plug in from the same company and kept having this problem, increasing one or both of these valuse should eliminate the clicking.

yeah iv tried tweaking both those knobs. The smallest setting i seem to be able to get on the attack is 13ms. putting it up anymore gets rid of most of the clicking but then i loose the gat effect as the sounds start to merge.

and changing the delay time has the same effect of sounds merging.

im not using a decent soundcard btw, which is why i thought it might be the computer.

il check the vst meter thing though and see what thats doing.

also is there maybe a better sound i can use than a snare to control the sidechain? like a purer signal? i was wondering if i used just a pure sine wave, pulsed on and off to control it might make it more accurate?

In this months CM mag there was a tutorial all about using Cubase 5's gate feature, i dont think SX has it? They used a white noise for their trigger and said use different triggers to acheive different results so i'd try a few things ourt and see what works best. You want a short sample for your trigger though i would have thought. Try a small sample of white noise or a closed hat maybe and see how that works, and having tried the sidechain compressor from that company and acheivein pretty crap results id also suggest maybe using a different gate. Or perhaps update to Cubase 5 :p

Cheers mate ill check that gate you mentioned! I just use Cubase 5's own sidechain and gate now. I dont know of any other free sidechain compressors other than the one you are using, sorry.

I think Camelphat can be used as a sidechain compressor if you already have that. http://www.producercafe.com/?p=307 But other than that ive not come accross any mate, sorry.
