So I start listening to music from my bedroom speakers at 7am - 7.30
Then I listen to my ipod 7.30-9 quite loudly
Then again at 4-5pm and most of the evening if I'm not doing anything else through headphones.
My mums concerned about me getting tinnitus, the constant neverending noise in the ear...
Apparently there's a type of earplug that protects my ears from the music that producers where that don't distort the music... where can I buy some?
Is anyone else afraid of 'getting' tinnitus?

lol Triquatra u kno honestly here they don't need to have it that loud they do it b/c they think every1 else wants 2 hear their shit. it is just that shit. i have mine loud but loud enough 4 me 2 enjoy normally most ppl can't hear it when i'm on the bus just in a pretty quiet room.
and correct me if i'm wrong, but aren't ipod earplugs real shitty that prevents them from sending out a high volume? i do remember they broke real easily for me but i remember i was always dissatisfied with the volume on them.

Your Mum is right.
The best advice is to keep the volume fairly low, ie; don't try to replicate how you'd hear it at a rave.
The thing is, your ears will become accustomed to the lower levels and it will 'feel' loud.
If you've ever listened to music late at night and the later it gets the more you turn it down, so as not to
offend family or neighbours, and it still sounds loud, you'll know what I mean.

I rarely use headphones just because I believe its the worst form of noise as its just directly into your ear, I only use headphones when people are in bed.
When im lay in bed though and its silent at night, i can still hear a slight whistle i guess it is....its not loud or annoying but if i concentrate on it i can hear it, otherwise i dont notice.
But yeah, a rave is the worst lol, your ears are litterely ringing the whole of the next day aswell.

In the end, it doesnt matter what the source is or where its pointed. It's the volume that does the damage.

Yeah just keep it as low as you can really and buy some plugs for when you go raving. Like Iono says, you get used to the volume after a while and it feels loud enough.
I get the odd random buzz in my ear but it doesn't really last longer than 10 seconds and only happens once in a blue moon. Think I started behaving myself just in time really! Far too many nights hugging walls of speakers at parties when I was younger.

+1 for ear plugs. need them for riding - wind whistling through the helmet is typically over 100 dB, and its a high screech to go with that.

That's nothing. The sound of James Starstruck beating one out easily reaches the 10,000 dB mark. He lives in Brissy, i live in Sydney, and i can hear it from my house.
The dude is a fiend.

meh meh meh haha
What i meant was, having the volume loud on your headphones is imo worse than having it loud on speakers for the fact that all the soundwaves are going into your ear, where as from speakers they go all over the place.
But yes, obviously its ultimately volume control that does the damage

There isn't a magical ear plug that will prevent you developing Tinnitus. Just use a bit of common sense and some sort of protection and that will be enough, i'm sure. I went to Creamfileds in 2008 and Leeds in 2009 and, at both festivals, the majority of the time i was there was spent wearing a pair of shitty, disposable, foam ear-plugs nicked from work. My hearing was just as clear as before i went, I took them out for almost a day and noticed a massive difference, i also whore some plugs all day at work (noisy factory). As long as you have some kind of protection whilst listening to loud music, ie Rave, Club etc and you keep your ipod at a reasonable level you should be ok.
You won't be able to wear ear-plugs when you have your ipod in as they are in-ear headphones aren't they? You could wear some plugs whilst DJ'ing though. I have read that listening to music through headphones is far worse for fatiguing your ears than speakers, maybe Influx can confirm or deny that (sure he has mentioned it too), so maybe try not to listen through cans as much.
I did a search on another forum that's a bit more production minded and these seem to quite popular
http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/er20.aspx To answer your question. Yes, i am terrified of developing Tinnitus. I occasionally get a high pitched ringing in my ears and temporary deafness and it really annoys me. To have that constantly for the rest of my life would drive me mad.

Now I'm scared, because mine is always at 100% and I still think it's not loud enough
I guess I have a problem with my ears, many people already told me that! For example: It's 2AM, I'm talking to a girlfriend on the phone.. it's absolutely silent, everything I can hear is our voices. My phone is set to maximum volume! Still I almost can't hear her :S
Another example would be in class. My mate tells me something, like 10 times. But sometimes I still can't hear him! But okay I guess that's also because of the noise in the class

Yeah I have the same, but that's just the high frequencies. Like for example, if you've got a lot of devices and a lot of electronic in your room, you will hear that. And I really have a lot, I mean I have my whole DJ Equipement ( CDJs, Turntables, Mixer, ), the computer, amps, monitors, TV, Receiver, and so on and so on You also may hear it when you turn on your computer or TV. Try it! When it's silent, turn your TV on, set it on mute, and listen carefully. If you can hear it, it means your ear can hear higher frequencies, which is good, if not, well.. then not, lol. Well it may be better, cause I find it pretty annoying sometimes, as I can really hear it loudly. When I go to sleep, I plug everything out... There's plenty of tests like that on the internet, check it out, it's worth the try :-)

Tinnitus is curable actually as far as i know, although i don't know if it matters if it's a result of listening to music too loudly or not. The sound comes from your brain. Anyway i think everyone has it to some degree.
