When i first started on Fruityloops in 2002 i was using a 400 mhz comp for ages. People claim to need way more than they do to make music. You don't need more than 2 gig of ram (and that's a huge ammount already), i don't care what anyone says. Anyone ever heard of efficiancy?

I upgraded my PC to 3GB earlier in the year & the bloke at the shop told me i would never need anymore than that so why would you ever need 6GB?
As for Packard Bell my sister has one & has had problem after problem with it. I've also heard bad things about them on other forums on the www.

For standard computing you will never need more until programs become 100x more memory hogs. But for things such as video production you will need more, especially during rendering. Having less RAM could mean taking up hours and hours just waiting for it to render.

I don't see why though. People got on fine 5-10 years ago. You don't need more, it just allows you to be more impatient.

TBH RAM costs sod all at the moment so there is no reason to not go a bit overkill for future proofing sake. You would be hard pushed to use more than 4GB effectively for gaming or music production now but a few years down the line that could all have changed. Remember Vista and Windows 7 use a lot more RAM for starters. Having said that if you don't do either of the above or some other resource hungry activity then it is definitely way overkill.

What version and plugins are you running now though!? Times have changed and new versions of DAWs and plugins use a lot more memory. Most new builds with windows 7 will be sitting at 1GB use when idle! That would leave you 1GB which is definitely not enough for production these days.

2GB is the standard suggested spec for general computer use on windows 7 64bit. ;)

Exactly you don't need more for standard computing, 3GB is perfectly good for Windows 7. Remember about a gig of your RAM is going to Windows itself. And have to remember if you don't have a 64-Bit Operating System you can't use more then 4GB anyway. It's not needed for anything but very resource intensive productions like rendering video, or if you're doing a lot of multi-tasking with programs that take up a lot of usage (e.g. gaming while streaming internet radio and downloading an album at the same time).

A-la-quote to show I'm not full of shit:
quote:
One of the greatest advantages of using a 64-bit version of Windows Vista is the ability to access physical memory (RAM) that is above the 4-gigabyte (GB) range. This physical memory is not addressable by 32-bit versions of Windows Vista.

Depending on the version of Windows Vista that is installed, a 64-bit version of Windows Vista supports from 1 GB of RAM to more than 128 GB of RAM. The ability to address more physical memory lets Windows Vista minimize the time that is required to swap processes in and out of physical memory. Therefore, Windows Vista can manage processes more efficiently. This memory management feature helps improve the overall performance of Windows Vista.

Same thing is true for Windows 7. Also if any of you have anything under Enterprise I recommend upgrading because of the added safety features, including Bitlocker. Also just so you know, if you have a DVD of say Windows 7 Home you already have every other Windows 7 installation on the disc, you just need the key to unlock it. Whether you do this by buying a key from Windows or.. something else, is up to you.

And for further investigation: Look at this to compare versions of Windows, and Look here to see differences of Windows 7 editions. Having owned every Windows since ME, Windows 7 is the best of the bunch. XP was great, but 7 improves a lot of things and makes a lot of it user friendly.

I use XP at home, so the max memory i can use is 3,2GB. If i open Opera, foobar2000 (music), AutoCad and Paint Shop Pro (which is usually the most programs i have running at once), i can get up to 1GB or a little higher on memory usage (depending how many files i have open on the latter two).

At work i also have XP and there i usually have open AutoCad (often 2) with a dozen files open, word, excel and Opera and even there it rarely goes much higher then 1GB.

Thats pretty much the most i will need for a long time. Also on these new computers quad core processors are pretty much shit. None of my essential programs can use it, so a dual core with higher frequency would be much better.

This is very true, spending money without research is a very bad decision but is something companies capitalize on. Most home users do not realize that getting anything above a dual-core is completely utterly useless because 99% of your programs will not, do not, and will not in the foreseeable future use all the cores. It's wasted money for "speed" for programs that don't access them. Getting a fast dual-core over a slower quad-core and save you some green for getting a better cooling system!

The average user will never need more then 3GB until Windows eats up more of it. Word programs, etc. barely take up MBs of usage, same with browsers, etc.

Sample test: I opened up my task manager and looked at my most resource intensive program up right now, which is my browser (Firefox 5.0) which a handful of addons which is about 154,500KB of usage, which converted is 0.147342682 gigabytes.

My trusty Acer has done me proud this last year! Millions (well, thousands) or Air Miles racked up, survived a total soaking by a gushing Air Con unit on a bus in Thailand (let it dry out for two full days before I turned it on - lucky the lad with me was an electrician/had some common sense, because I was about ready to power it up straight away), and has coped with a truly staggering amount of questionable pornography.

I do very little to challenge it's capabilities to be fair. Occasional five hour stretch on Champ Manager, but yeh, mainly just tunes and porn.

I have a 4GB RAM I think, Quad core something, and my god, these days my PC struggles with FL soooo much...

It seems that when FL uses a high CPU usage, Explorer.exe will **** up and go 100% CPU usage and the entire PC will lag like ****.

I really do struggle with music these days unfortunately.
