Upon Getting my Ndx800's and Mixer, Now i just finished Djing a Small gig (Sisters Bday lol)

I am left with the reality of getting more music, And im curious, What sources do you use (preferably free) for Any style of music (main ones are any kind of Dance music, top 40, etc remix, ) And my second question (and dont shoot the messanger) is Do you guys litterly buy all your music? or download some for free etc? my friend and I were talking about music sources and he said Downloading for free is alot better (and i too know some good sources) but doesnt that condricited the "Dj" Licesnse, or even "code"?

Just cuirosity Please offer your 2 cents, id love to hear :)

I'm not a dj but I'v done my research. Anybody who actually cares about hardcore won't download free toons. I'm saving my money right now so I don't buy any toons, but I could download illegal copies if I wanted to but i support the scene and the artist. There are some really good sites for free toons for example hardcorehighlights.com and theres also thread deticated to legal free toons(http://www.happyhardcore.com/forums/topic.asp?topic_id=53041).
Heres a vid of places to buy hardcore toons. Support the scene, support the artist.

just to let you know, forum rules state that you are not allowed to request music for free or for sites to get them for free, unless you are requesting for tracks that the label and/or producers of those tracks have agreed to offer those tracks for free to the online community.

for a site that offers legally free downloads, check this place out

http://hardcorehighlights.com/

and from the HU label check this out there's some top quality stuff on there :)

http://www.hardcoreunderground.info/?page=downloads

those two links are purely hardcore links as far as the rest, I don't know someone else on here can offer sites on where to find legally free tracks from other edm genres

as far as the second part of your question, we would like to believe that all djs do pay for their music, but sadly there's quite a bit that probably don't. Especially in the smaller local scenes where it's not as profitable and the djs get little to nothing at every gig. I'm sure the bigname djs do pay for their music if they don't already get the tracks for free or at a great deal directly from the producers themselves.

I'm not quite a dj but I once did download music for free but now I pay for it and I've deleted the majority of what i've pirated. there are some sites like beatport that have some great deals sometimes for customers in the US. and also trackitdown now has that pro acct that drastically reduces the price of each track with a monthly membership fee. and there are bundle albums out there that you can get roughly 35 full-length dj friendly tracks for probably 16 USD

why support a scene that ****s you up in the end? :)

Anyways, if you ever get a gig, usually the place you're going to play at handle all the licenses needed, but if you want to be legal and make your own mix, you must either pay a performance fee, or ask each and every copyright owner for the tracks you intend to mix before doing it.

you'll have to check out your laws on music licensing and copyright.

as far as the US is concerned, some bars/clubs do pay a fee to companies like BMG in order to be allowed to play their music in their facilities. If I remember the copyright laws correctly, djs technically are supposed to pay for royalties to the rightful owners of the songs they're playing, but it's really hard to keep track of all of that it's not even worth upholding that policy. especially when websites such as TID, beatport, and others state on their sites that for live performance it's ok.

It's just a technicality, no one actually cares. It only matters when it comes to you making money directly from their music.

In the UK there's a chance that the cost of licences, royalty payments for pubs/clubs is going to increase massively. Going to upset a lot of people!

I'm not sure, but I'm just saying that if it was as black and white as the rules state it is then people would have to pay royalties for making mixes in their bedrooms and putting them online, when in reality no one is going to care in a million years.
