It's great to see Kevin Energy will be making a comeback next year. But there's been some amazing Freeform made during, and before, he took a break. ReBuild, Stamina Records etc. have done amazing things for the music.

Finally found that
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5meyFZd8flU It's not me who pisses all over the work etc/awareness/getting it back on at raves. When this tune was about, freeform was massive and people were very aware and guys like sharkey and Energy were playing it. Those guys left and freeform was not massive, with poor awareness and not being played at big raves etc. So how about have a listen, go away and make some good freeform and then perhaps people will be aware of it and play it etc. I know what you will say about backwards steps etc.... going forward etc.... In other industries when things go forward and it doesn't work out, they go back to when it did and you can't honestly tell me freeform is working to the point it was a few years ago because if you can, you are mental and in denial. The guys who have worked on it since the big boys left have done their best and we can't ask for much more, but it hasn't worked. You've held it back to be honest and i hope the return of Kev will put things right and if not........... Freeform sucks at the moment anyway.

You are clearly trying to wind me up, I'm not rising to it. I know facts and figures and I know I got it on at Westfest last year and HTID this year.

Sadly he's not he's just like that. Besides, if he was really trying to wind you up, it doesn't take much at all

I also think that freeform is generally a pile of shite and always has been.

I think i have a fair right to talk about this whether i sound a C**t or not.
- Firstly Wong up until the last couple of years (which coincidentally was when freeform seemed to drop off) I liked it quite a lot and these guys who took over somewhat changed the style to this darker twistier stuff and removed the euphoric element (which is my personal reasons for not liking it). That however is not what i'm getting at. The change seemed to make freeform lesser than, ie dropped off the big events etc. If you look at Beatport and Trackitdown these days, there are a lot less freeform tracks about and the ones that are tend to be skippable, that's what i'm getting at.
- Secondly thumpa no i'm not trying to wind you up. if i was i would do a much better and directed job job of had have no fear. I also used to buy a lot of the rebuild cds when there was some variety and quick liked a lot of the freeform. You guys were doing things others were not and the day came when you all took a douglas suppository and the variety ended. The cds lacked variety and i couldn't buy them anymore. of course you will say that they still sell out. Well i'm sure 400 or so could sell out but when measured against the thousands in years gone by i think it's a little sad which is again what i'm getting at.
-Thirdly i would like nothing more than to post how wonderful i find freeform because to be honest i found it to be a great distraction from UK hardcore and Gabba in years gone by (Variety you see) but that hasn't happened. Perhaps Kev will save us from this monotony or has the damage been done already we shall see.

Music is all subjective of course but I actually think freeform is the strongest it's ever been. Record sales are comparably up. I also think it's more diverse now than ever - for every techy/minimal/odd bit of music there's a comparable riff-based alternative. Of my bits mentioned elsewhere in this thread: for 'Smiler' there was 'Euphoria' on the same release, and for 'Let Yourself Go' there was 'Feels So Good' on the same CD. That trend extends to other artists/labels.
I also think the perception of the music at raves is in the eye of the beholder, but certainly if it seems to have regressed in that respect that's a decision made solely by promoters, who are worried by numbers, and thus sometimes taking a risk on an up n' coming to mid-level freeform producer/DJ isn't always an option. Of the times I've been fortunate enough to play at the larger raves such as Hardcore Heaven/HTID, the crowd have always lapped up whatever I've thrown at them, so I actually think punters' tastes are more diverse than perhaps raves over the last few years have given them credit for. Probably why a shift towards more freeform sets being featured is now occurring, contrary to the opinions of some in this thread.
In terms of the gap the NEC podcast left, there's a few freeform ones kicking around, but to add to the mix I've recently started a Stamina one. As with all good hardcore podcasts it doesn't perhaps run as timely as it should (!) but you can check it out here:
https://soundcloud.com/staminarecords/sets/podcasts Akin to the main Stamina labels, it's a mixed bag of dancefloor-friendly freeform through to UK Hardcore through to darker-sounding bits. If you think freeform has never been 'your thing' I encourage you to check it out :-)

Is it because you're catering towards the more mainstream sounds? :)
To be honest, Freeform lost alot of movement when Tazz left, and no offence A.B, but I have never really liked yours or Douglas's sound at all.
