Was doing a quick mix the other night, just merrily playing with myself, and when i'd finished realised i'd got through 31 tunes in about 70 minutes. Can't say i was going for quick mixing, just enjoying myself - but it seems a lot.
For me, less than 15 tracks in an hour set is nowhere near enough, but i've never considered a maximum.
So, what do you guys expect when listening to a set? Bear in mind i'm talking about proper mixing, not just clanging from one tune to the next (not intentionally anyway)!

Interesting question because in many cases i would say that any more than 15 is too much because you would have to cut a lot songs short. Yet Hixxy used to do exactly this around 1997-8, play full sets of half songs with the odd full song, and i should really dislike it but he did it so well that it sounds amazing. Very unique and very enjoyable.

I think if done tastefully, and with good, clean cuts, I think it's perfectly acceptable to do many songs in a short period of time. I know the Toneshifterz dropped 17 tracks in a half hour set at Magic City, which is crazy. But I think for an hour set anything of 35 might be pushing it a little bit.

in a cd lately 15 seems too little. that's like playing all tracks from beginning to end with uninventive transitions. Especially since most of the new tracks these days seem to be only about 5mins long or less. I'd also say that anything about 30 is too much as well.

It really depends what you're after. If you somehow get carried away, it doesn't need to be bad playing a lot of tracks in a short time.
An internet pal of mine (8 years ago) took part in a dj-contest of Germany's only commercial EDM-radio station. He played about 15-20 Trance-tracks within half an hour and won the contest.
Regarding CD-releases I feel disappointed very often, if a bunch of good tracks get played halfway only.

forgot to mention as far as live performances goes, it's dependent on the capabilities of the djs. When Gammer was here he threw down probably around 20 tracks, maybe a little less, in a 50-55min set. An incredible set that was too! He had mashups going on and his dj skills imo are pretty amazing! And I knew almost every song he threw down and was not left disappointed if he didn't play any track for a long period of time.

depends who it's for really....for gimmicky mixes I draw the line at around 30ish but for 'here's what I can do on the decks' I'd draw the line at 20 I try to keep things short and snappy, about 55 minutes to an hour if I can. If people want more then they'll have to wait for the next mix.
This is hardcore btw, for stuff like psytrance I'd just take people on a journey and it's done when it's done really, however long that takes or however many tracks it uses.

Depends on the DJ and the mixing. Latinxtc's example of Gammer was perfect, I've heard a few of his sets where he smashes heaps of songs together, does a lot of mashups but keeps it flowing really well. Another good example is The Speedfreak (frenchcore) who mixes a ridiculous amount of tracks and samples in his mixes, and pulls it off really well. Of course in mixing this way there will always be a song or 2 that you love and wished it went longer, but if the set as a whole is good, then who am I to complain?

TBH, if i want to hear the whole songs i can just listen singles. If you don't go a bit from the norm, listening the mix doesn't really give any extra value over the individual tunes.
I don't like "megamix's" though, that have been done a lot in Eurodance. But 20 to 30 tunes would probably be a good amount.
