With things being quite busy at NSR and other commitments, I havent been able to spend as much time producing as I would have liked.

I was never a fantastic producer (as many of you will know from songs I have posted previously) and I always had problems with the synth and bass being in the same key.
Anyway.....

I have really started to get into production again and I do an hour or two every night. I currently have 3 tracks in the pipeline that will all be collabs (mainly because my production skills arent at the 'releaseable' level). If the tracks are good enough they may see a release on NSR, although if they are not good enough.....they wont.

The tracks will be:
Pharynx & Disease - Kill The Virus (I have done my part on the track and this is nearing completion, there are no clips yet)
Pharynx & Sync Error - Dark Forces (Trying my hand at gabba)
Pharynx & Chris Ross - Never Be Free (UK hardcore track)

There are clips of 'Dark Forces' and 'Never Be Free' on my myspace page (Sync Error and Chris Ross have not yet started work on these tracks)

Please visit my myspace and give me a bit of feedback on the early stages of these tracks.

http://www.myspace.com/djpharynx

Also a big thanks to Ionosphere who has put up with endless questions about 'Kill The Virus'!

Okay ill give a lickle feedback but im not the best person to ask production-wise really.

The sample that comes in at 24 seconds sounds ok but then at about 50 seconds onwards sounds out of key with the bass and could do with being tuned. There are quite a few out of key notes in the 2nd part of the melody also, theyre not in key with your bass and the melody seems like its trying to be happy and uplifting at first but then starts to become dark and a little gabber-ish in the same bar and it just doesnt work im afraid mate. You could try changing the bass to the same chord the melody is playing and make it sound darker or you could change the bass and keep the uplifting, bouncy vibe. I think the synth itself could do with some work too, but thats more technical production side of things which i know f all about lol.

Cant really say much about the Gabber track as ive not really tried my hand at it so havent a clue really. However, the melody sounds really nice everything in key by the sounds of things.

All i can really say is learn about chords and scales, im not too clued up on them myself but having come from a bit of a musical background, i know what notes sound right and go together and what dont. You need to learn this mate, look up musical theory and chords and scales on google, its helped me alot already.

Piano chords:
http://www.8notes.com/piano_chord_chart/
think Mortis recommended this to me (nice one if you read this mate ;) ) been very helpful for me should be of some use to you too.

And....

Chords and scales:
http://www.pianoworld.com/fun/vpc/piano_chords.htm

Btw, are you suing samples or VSTs for basslines, leads etc?

Thanks for the link mate, Ill give it a look. TBH I was a little unsure about 'Never Be Free' too. It needs alot of work.
I use the 3x osc for the synth and bass in that track, but I think maybe they clash a bit, but I dont have another good vst that I can use for the bass really! And Im not paying £200+ for a vst when Im crap at producing.
I just dont know much about theory, like C major and minor etc, can you have them in the same riff or does it all have to be in major? That website is all very well but......ahhh i cant be bothered explaining lol, ill just look it up or something

So if my bassline goes:

E-E-E-E/E-E-E-E/B-B-B-B/A-A-A-A/

Which notes can I use in each bar to keep it in key? I dont understand how I know that, cause I dont know if that E is major, minor, flat, or nothing, but I do know it has other notes that it is 'friendly' with

You can have minor and major and whatever other chords you want in a progression - IE (these are just random chords that just popped into my head i wouldnt recommend building a profression from these lol)....Am (A minor) B (B major) and i dunno C7 (that may have confuse the issue throwing numbers in lol but you get the idea) - but when playing the Am chord for example, for the duration of that chord do not steer from those notes in the chord or scale, else the sounds will clash and sound awful. Do look into it mate youull have to learn or your musical knowledge and as a result musical quality wont improve.

Youre using fruity loops then? So it should tell you the notes you are playing in the piano roll so keeping youre melodies and basses in key should be easy. just right click in the piano roll and go down to chords and all youre chords are right there ready for you. Drop down whatever chord you want and then build a melody (or modify yours to that chord) and do the same for the bass. Keep your bass playing at the root note of youre chord at first (experiment as you go along) IE Am keep the bass going along at A then going onto the B chord play your bass a B and so on.

About the VSTs - id recommend buying one or looking for a free one and giving it a go, 3xOSC is all well and good but you dont really have all that much control over the sounds being produced. I was shit at first but im getting some good sounds going now. Check out Sylenth1 http://www.kvraudio.com/get/2500.html, very good VST (apparently from the reviews ive seen) and not too costly.

Sorry if any of this isnt very cohearant or well explained ive got a lot of windowss on the go and im struggling to concentrate lol

Youre bass is just the notes dont worry bout chords for your bass mate.

What you need to do now then is make the chords of youre melody from your bassline (you dont always have to do it this way sometimes its easier to make your progression first then construct your bass around this).

Juust play about putting chords down with youre bassline playing and see what sounds good to you, use the auto-chord thing in Fruity's piano roll. It will tell you the notes used (Emajor = E,G#,B) IF youre happy with that chord try to make a melody from it. Just play about mate eventually youll know what sounds right and what doesnt.

notes you can use in each bar:
E= E - #G - B

B= B - #D - #F

A = A - #C - E

try using mainly these notes, but also use other from the scale (E #F #G A B #C #D) as decorations, so it doesnt sound plain

Nicely, nicely.

Okay much better mate, all sounds in key. Will say this Never Be Free is quite catchy, must be even my dad was humming it lol. I urge you to get some new VSTs though mate. 3xOSC isnt gonna cut it, get some demos. Sylenth1, Albino3, Massive all good and easy enough to use (well Albino and Massive are a bit more complex but still) and can make some great sounds. Also Z3ta and Vanguard - ive heard good things, not keen myself though.

Your synths and basses at the minute sound very samey also the tracks themselves are very similar, but then that's the case with pretty much all UK Hardcore and that's the sound youre going for i presume.

Production on a whole needs - same as the synths - to give a more professional, polished sound, but that will come with time, practise and better equipment IE monitors, more plugins and stuff :p (i saw your post on HP but didnt feel i knew enough to post) so dont worry too much about it. Till youve been at it a while you wont be producin Darwin-esque epic tunes. Im in the same boat as you so i know how frustrating it can be, just stick at it mate.

Oh and definitely post more and look through other posts on HP (Hardcore Producer) tis an abundance of knowledge and knowledgable people on their, even if they are a bunch of gay, repping, acapella exclusives whores

Ok cheers mate! Haha, cant believe I had your dad humming one of my tunes! Lol that is mad. Maybe my tunes will appeal to an older generation (like Bulby and Ionosphere haha only jokin guys)

Yeah i went on hp and i got a good tutorial on layering, so ive took that on board and im trying to layer my 3xosc with other synths to find new different sounds. \id like to get vanguard etc but its just cash innit, but ill look for some demos. I really want some monitors though.

Thanks for the feedback though......at least its in key! If ever you want me to listen to your material, just pm me a link and ill give you the best feedback i can

No worries matey, yeah my dad is a bit of a nob though so just bear that in mind lol.

Will check out Vanguard myself actually (never heard of it before but looks good). Its definitely worth buying a good VST i know its a fair few bob but it is worth it, then again i dunno which would be more important - Monitors so you could hear the sounds you are making in much better quality though on a crap synth so still poor, or VSTs so you can make good sounds but not be able to hear them in their true quality lol. Im guessing VSTs anyway as thats qhat ive gone with and am saving for monitors amongst a lot of other shit.

Nice one for the offer mate, will defo have to post some stuff up. Not till im really happy with it though. It'd probably help get some advice now before i waste weeks/months/years making shite obvlivious to where im going wrong lol.
