Done this one a month back, The only reference to the Mario Boo's is the laughs in this - all riffs are original.

funny thing is, i was playing this very level on Mario 64 only a few days ago (the one where you have to go find the ghostie in the garden out the back of the castle and then you shrink into the lil cage world thing)
