every time i check this page (i'm a bit of a voyeur/pervert when it comes to these things) under the 'visits today' i've always got a number that seems way too high - what does this stat measure? the number of times i've logged on/off? views of the active topics page? number of times i've scratched my nads while reading the posts? i'm a little bit confused over this ...

It's not 100% accurate, it depends on sessions , IP address and cookies, for the most it works (like 90% of the time) for some it might not.
