Doing a cover is fine....
But what about distributing it?? Like if I did a Scott Brown cover, could I get the pants sued off me if I put, say, put it on a website??

After 5 years anyone can do a cover version, just go down to the RIAA or the MCPS or whoever in your country, fill out a form and it's legal. This is the case for 90% of the music out there.
But if you do a cover the orginal artist gets all the publishing rights on the track, meaning the orginial artist gets the money from radio play, TV play, karaoke, ring tones, CD publishing, video games, public performance, general broadcasting and even from web broadcasts. If you do a cover the only money you get is from sales of the record you release.
In the long term publishing has the most money when you look at it.

I wanted to know something more in depth.
If one were to remix a song with or without permission, and just play it for personal use (not selling it or getting it signed at ALL), is that okay? Because I found a post from Nick Arnold when he started a competition for Sailaway, and he said it was perfectly fine to play out the remix that you made as long as it got no money (like getting it signed or selling a cd with it on it).

The answer is correct, basically if you do a remix for yourself and you own the orginial CD and it is played in a way that no money is made from it then I believe that is okay.

If the artist have been dead for 50 years and nobody else owns the rights, you can do whatever you like with the tunes...
So using melodys from old classical tunes is a easy way to make good tunes...

I reckon i know what ULTRAWANK sorry! Ultrabeat will do next! they will cover this track, don't know the name but i bet they will cause it has male vocals (unless it was originally them!! haha) don't know the track, it's quite melodic and uplifting, vocals go "it's all because of yoooou, blah blah blah......Cause now i'm feeling finnnnnnne, now i'm feeling fi-i-ine" repeats and then a synthline comes in. what is this track?
