Really? I had just heard the original just before I heard the hardcore remix for the first time (I think someone played the clip from a recent set back when the remixes started making it's rounds)

The original melody is even older. There's in an interesting post on reddit listing most of the known versions of the track.
The Final Fantasy was first to feature the vocals though.
