Maybe I should start collecting some other more popular music and try and earn some money/respect that way? I quite like D n B but I'm certainly not into it in the degree I am hardcore.. but I could still DJ it well enough... I've already been offered work if I played D n B or house... reckon it's worth doing or should I hold on until I can play hardcore? :)

I suppose if needs must..... u cud start playing at nights dnb or hard house so that ur name gets known and then after so long u cud try see if theyll let you play a hardcore set one night and see how it goes down, or try getting your own nights going...
thats what me mates did see, started off playing for lacal clubs then got their own night going playing trance, hard trance, dnb and a little funky house to get the ppl interested... but once they started playing techno and hardcore so less and less ppl came.... and eventually they did a banging hardcore and gabba night and the club boss said he cudnt let them do any more nights cus the music was too hard and didnt interest enuff people!! pussies all just got scared cus of the gabber!!! gutting really.... we hope to get it going again by March cus we started it last march :-) on the 14th of march infact - the night me n my lad got together :-D he he he

Iven been playin a fair bit of trance the last couple of months and i think its a good idea. Over here in Holland hardcore is near non existant so its good to get a bit of a name spinning trance or house. Its always good to have a bit of variety too

I've been thinking of going the same route. I've been playing hardcore and d&b for years, but I'm getting ready to try something different. I consider myself a fairly talented DJ, and I think it's a shame that I (or anyone) doen't get to play out often because of the music we play.

I've always found its a good idea to have some varience. I spin trance when I'm burnt out from playing hardcore. Keeps my mixing sharp but gives me a break.
I wouldn't know about playing out as I'm just now going to go see if I can spin a night at a local bar where friends of mine spin.

Personally I wouldn't spin any music I wasn't passionate about, because I don't think i'd do as good a job as somebody who is. in respect to knowing the music, its history, what other people like etc...
You have to ask yourself why you want to be a dj playing gigs, is it for the music or the money. if its just for the cash then fine, play whatever gets you bookings. But if you want to do it for the music then stick to what you love and work hard to achieve it, promote yourself, run coaches to events for bookings, start your own event... whatever it takes really and pray you get some good luck!

If i wanted to i could easily make a living from playing commercial stuff but i just do that as and when i feel like it (cos my heart isn't in it) and chuck the odd hardcore tune in here and there!
I've never tried to make it as a Hardcore DJ and never will but it's a lot easier to make it as a club DJ if you're prepared to play what the venues want.

Thats why I don't mind spinning trance. I love good trance. I just can't spin it too much. After about a week I'm craving Hardcore. I don't think anyone is really about the money here. More about the feeling of playing for people.
