I'm wondering, what's the normal amount of vinyl pressed for a release in the hardcore scene? and what's the diffrence betwen the big labels and the smaller ones?

For example, a raver baby record will probably sell alot, 1000 copies or 7000 copies? I have no clue. And releases like MADCOW001 or some camel record how many vinyls are we talking there?

Reason I wonder is because I just got a record which on the label said "limited to 500 copies". And I wondered is that a really small or a normal number?

usually 500 is a minimum to make a release cost effective so a small label would normally have 500 but you could have as many as you want depending on how confident you are the release will sell.

Smaller labels typically press 500 and then will do represses if necessary

I already thought the question had been answered, but yes you need to press about 500 units to basically break even on very simple / small releases.

There are other things involved that raise or lower the price of a release like:

1. Studio costs.
2. Remix costs.
3. Studio mastering / mixdown costs.
4. Graphic design costs.
5. Number of colors used in the label artwork.
6. Thickness of the vinyl.
7. Sleeve designs and number of colors used.
8. Transport of the vinyl from the pressing plants to shops / distributors.

So each releases has their own break even point.

Some people (like the limited runs) would rather just quickly (if they can) sell 500 units and move to the next release because they dont have the time to screw around with re-pressing.

Thanks for the answers guys, and silvers post sexplained a bit. You see, I always thought there was a pretty high "base"-cost for pressing vinyls thus making less than 500 would make it hard to break even.
And I was confused about that because people press a few promos months before the full release, and that would be a really bad deal.
But ofcourse you have to take all the other expences into account.

(hope I'm making sense, I just woke up )

Aye what Silver has put is true. For Indiscriminate we need to sell in the region of 300 to break even but then we are lucky cos we have an in house engineer and graphic designer and we have a few mates who sort out cheap pressings and what have you. I'd say that most smaller labels are lucky to hit the 500 mark for sales per release, with medium labels looking up to 750 and the bigger ones towards 1500 to 2000.

How any pressed is no real secret i dont think, no point in hiding it

i have been pressing up 600, but as demand is going down :( im moving down to 500, no point having too many spares hangin around :)

Im sure the bigger labels press up 1000 and do represses as needed, however im sure raverbaby must knock out into the 3000's, although i belive alpha own a pressing plant now, so represses aint too hard.

I found it would cost me around 7 dollars aus a vinyl, for it to done well (cardbaord sleeves ect.) for a lot of 500.. that incl phasing it right, mastering and such but well not studio time.
