Actually, I would say its kinda easy. If you REALLY REALLY want your license like i did when i was 16, you'll study that whole thing back n' forth/inside n' out. Cant speak for all people in california but majority of my peers 16 or otherwise have had little trouble with it.

yea, a Road Manual or something.... it covers all of the road safety stuff and car stuff etc... lol, somebody else explain it properly!

how exactly thick is it anyways? and road safety...isn't it common sense and don't you sort of learn after having to sit in the back seat of your mom or dad's car for like 15-16 years? and where do you take drivers-ed? does someone come to your school or something?

It's basically a theory test, i.e what do you if if....... There is a book that tells you all the road signs and what they mean etc.

Squishy....dont you have a DMV in NY? (Dept. of Motor Vehicles) Thats where you get the book to study the laws and safety mumbo-jumbo.
And in some schools teachers MAY offer their own services to teach students how to drive but mostly you have to find schools that offer the courses.
And yea most of the test is common sense but some parts are specific. (for example: How many feet should you blah blah when you blah blah. or How fast should you be driving through a railroad stop. stuff like that)
