hi folks, i've just sent one of my mixes to a club and got knocked back as i wasn't what they were looking for, so in addition to it i'm thinking of hiring a community centre and doing my own gigs with my m8 helping out, do you's think it will pay me if i did that, i'm also wondering how i would get people to buy tickets for a small price and actually get people to come to it as well.

go for it mate, just work out how many people you reckon you could get to go along and see what the venue wants to do with that. they may give you a set payment, charge you for use of the hall or anything else in between!
i'd have thought you'd be better off with a small pub/club deal though because they're more likely to show interest 'cos more ppl coming to watch you means more ppl spending money on beer
get chatting to some people in useful positions and see what you can sort out.....

cheers for that m8, thats what scares me about putting up my own gig as i might make a disaster of it, thats why i would love something that has done it before to help me out, a mean i ain't the most confident and i don't think i could do it on my own.
So is their anyone willing to give me a hand, if so just send me a pm or an email and i'll get bk to you right away

Steps to throwing a proper event:
1. GET SOME MONEY!!!!!! lots of money- actually you can try to get by on a shoe string, but the more you have, the more control you can have over the event, the more likely someone is willing to work with you. People don't like the risk their money on someone else's dream.
2. FIGURE OUT THE BIG STUFF, namely venue and DJs. In the states, finding a venue for a one-off thing is pretty difficult. Most of the clubs are set up for weeklies and thanx to the RAVE Act, getting someone to rent you a space for an evening is difficult. Hopefully its better in the UK. When I threw my weekly, it all started when my roomate wandered into a bar that was more or less dead on a Friday night and asked if we could use the space once a week. Considering that they had such little attendance to begin with, it worked out well. You might want to find a place in a similar situation. They'd be more likely to give you a chance than someone with an already established clientele.
As far as DJs are concerned. From business standpoint worry about two things, how much do they want to get paid(if at all) and will they draw a crowd. If you're the only one spinning, no problem, but most people like to switch on and off at least, so find folks who are willing to spin for cheap and/or free who can bring in a crowd.
3. PROMOTE LIKE CRAZY!!! This is one of the most important things you can do, promote, promote, promote. This does take time and money. If you can, work out a promotional budget with the venue, do it. Some places will go for it, others will wait to see what you can bring in and then chip in. Hope you get folks like the first one. It helps to have helpers. One of the main reasons why we cancelled our weekly was because I was the only one actively talking with folks, handing out fliers everywhere, and hitting up messageboards and such. This can lead to burn out. So find some friends, offer them beer or something if necessary and get the word out. Since you look to be doing things around the holidays, expect some pretty stiff competition. you have to know why your event is better than then everyone elses.
4. GET THE DETAILS WORKED OUT. Who's providing sound and lighting, another major expense, and how much do you want/need. Do they have a bar? Can you get a cut? Or just take the door money? Or are you splitting that too? Get a contract worked out(its good to know a lawyer) if any money is going to be changing hands. Most people are good people, but be wary of people who don't mind taking advantage of an opportune situation, such as working with someone new to the promoting world such as yourself.
Also figure out when you're allowed to set up, what you have to take apart at the end of night, how everything is going to flow for the evening, etc, etc.
Its a lot to handle, and I suggest you work with people who have a good business sense around them. #4 should probably go before #3, but oh well, hopefully you get the point. If you're still up for this, Good luck

Yeah mate it is a bitch. And like a few other posts, there isnt many hardcore nights out there. If you really want to look at that is to do like hard trance/house or somthing like that, because they may consider you.
Only my opinion.

Me and my m8s did that a few yrs back and it was also my djing deput I would diffently recommend you do it in a club (advantages= loud sound system, lazers and strobe, proper bar with real staff, proper dj booth) We got the club rented out for 50quid which included 2 bar staff and 1 bouncer with all the strobes ect! We sold invitations for 2 pound each and got about 65-70 people who went which made us 140quid take off 50 for the club and that left us with a reasonable 90quid between us! It made no difference to me how much money we made cause I was planing to do it for free anyway.

i will give it my best shot, i mix just about any style of dance music, but all styles i've mixed have been nocked back by the bosses of the clubs i sent them to, so thats why i'm going to try it this way, also i will be getting a new cd mixing pack in about 2 or 3 months, what brand of cd decks and mixer will get me up to the standard clubs are looking for?
