This morning I got out my old hardcore CD's, those from the Mega Cheese era. I managed to listen for about 10mins before it did my head-in, but back when I bought them I loved them (obviously) and thought there was nothing better. Does anyone still like the older stuff or does it do your head-in too?

No, i still love Happy hardcore today and i probably will always love the sound.

Sounds a lot different to the hardcore of today so it's understandable that some people might like one and not the other.

The only reason i prefer new hardcore at present is because it's new - a few years down the line i might say i preferred the 96-98 stuff all along.

Ask me again in 2010!

Proper old school is crackin but is a bit repetitive and slow for a lot of hardcore listeners, and happy hardcore 94-98 is the stuff i grew up listening to so it will always have a special place with me but the newer stuff can take it further imo. I can see why a lot of peoiple who loved ravin to hardcore a few years back dont like the newer sound but if you look further than ther obvious with freeform, makina, the best U.K hardcore and gabba you'll find producers who make what you like and they can take the old sound to higher levels. So i'd say old school has it's place and is supreme but the new stuff has to be the main thing with production getting better month by month plenty more classics will be produced. There was a similar topic on ush and someone said something very true imo, people who used to go to raves between 89-98 dont like new stuff cos it's too like trance, people who have started ravin 2000+ dont like older stuff cos they cant relate to it but people who kept ravin throughout like it all. I like to think of myself as someone who likes it all even though i wasnt into rave at the time of real old school and tunes like shooting star, heart of gold, field of dreams were getting relesed the time i started listening to hardcore. The more i listen to the bigger variety of hardcore i like and i hope it keeps continuing, this week alone i've discovered finnish hardcore as something i could see me geting into and will keep searching for the perfect tunes.

Venga la familia makineros

The stuff I was refering too was 96-99, and I think thats now classed as oldskool.
I started listening to hardcore in 94 when a mate gave me a DJ Vibes tape, which was break-beat, but I soon got into bouncy techno and gabba. Then I got into happy hardcore and loved it, and when the new trancy hardcore came in, I hated it, for a while, but now I love it and I love freeform and I now hate the old happy hardcore.
But real oldskool, the like likes of Rat Pack, Vibes and Slipmat I love, but I only really listen to it now in the summer when out in the car.

I don't understand how the Happy stuff from '96-'99 can be classified as "Old Skool."

It doesn't even sound the same as true Old Skool does... then again I always end up saying it's all just hardcore anyway.

I still like the stuff from 96-99. Its what got me into hardcore in the first place, so there's that connection, plus its fun to spin stuff that you know really well and can just play with. On the flip side, I usually keep it to under a half hour or so when listening, so I guess I've grown out of it a little.
