Ad Aware and Spybot only get rid of a very limited ammount of things from what i've seen, they won't remove browser hijacks or anything.
As mentioned before, Hijack This is the best thing you can get, that will remove the problem nearly every time, although you have to know what to delete and not to delete with that, so it's a bit more tricky, but you can soon learn what's meant to be there and what isn't.
CWShredder, as already mentioned is another really good one, if your browser has been hijacked i suggest trying this first, and if that dosn't work, then try hijack this. 95% of the time both of those programs will remove most spyware and stuff, so you really should try them.
Even if they fail to get rid of the problem there is usually always another way, or you can do it manually, it's all very simple to work out once you know what to do to get rid of this stuff :)

Right click My Computer.
Select Properties.
Select Performance
Select File System
Select the Troubleshooting Tab.
Unclick "Disable System Restore"

Spyware has got to be the new bain of the internet. Far more annoying than viruses!
My narrow-minded sheltered type 65yo dad recently checked his phonebill and found that he had inadvertently dialed-up some premium rate numbers to porn sites. How he did that accidently is beyond an IT guy like me, but somehow I do believe he hasn't been visiting porn sites! (ok ok, so I think what I need to in order to sleep at night!)
I've since directed him to some sites for reading and downloads (Anti-spyware sites that is!) My laptop got hit really badly when I was on broadband. Cleaning the stuff on manually was a git.
Trouble is, it's the old virus conspiracy theory - are the writers of anti-spyware software the writers of spyware too? By installing anti-spyware software are you just advertising "this person pays to have spyware removed. Flood 'em with it"

Best solution is just to switch to Firefox, it's miles better than IE.
