on our most popular rave message board in washington DC, a bunch of people were bashing hardcore, saying they'd rather kill themselves than listen to it, saying it's all totally plurry crap, that it had all chipmunk vocals, and a bunch of other stereotypes about the music. so i wrote a quick response, and made them a mix to listen to. i did this in about 3 hours that i had to kill, so add and edit what you like and i'll repost it to the bastards. i honestly don't take the music that seriously, but i love it so i felt compelled to defend it.
the mix itself has a lot of played out tunes that i like a lot. i've put them on other mixes. but i included them since i thought it would appeal to som people and get away from the "too cheesey" sound. this post will probably piss some people off since i generalize a lot, but what the hell. and it'll piss others off since they're just generally grumpy and will make fun of anything the least bit serious or helpful. anyway.

i love hardcore. i understand why people don't. but more people dislike hardcore because it's cool to hate it than because they actually tried listening to it and decided that it was rubbish.
as far as frolic goes, i haven't listened to much by him. i spin hardcore primarily, i keep up on the new releases, but i've never listened to a frolic mix. what i've heard is basically generic, anthemy cheese happy hardcore. i like that stuff, but hardcore has more to offer. otherwise i have no problem with him per se. he runs a good production company, gives locals a chance, and is pretty professional about all of it. that's his strong suit. his DJing is just average and he doesn't produce. when he did he teamed up with luna-c and devastate and they did all the work and churned out a couple of crap tracks. to my knowledge, at least.
what's frustrating is that frolic plays anthemy hardcore in a generic way. that's fine. but the scene has so much more to offer. there's the new breakbeat hardcore, which is basically a combination of d'n'b, old skool hardcore, and some elements of happy hardcore and freeform. it's basically jungle without the attitude. check out www.kniteforce.co.uk
all the hard dance heads would probably get into a lot of freeform. there's some awesome stuff coming out of finland by guys like alek szahala, pain on creation, and others that is like psy trance with a harder edge. really, really cool tracks. kevin energy and the rest of the nu energy crew does standard freeform which is like hard trance, 20-30 bpm faster, and a little more experimental.
and as far as happy hardcore, a lot of it's become like hardcore trance. which in my opinion, is a little unfortunate. but a lot of it is still good. check out http://www.nextgenerationrecords.co.uk/ for a large catalog of the newer sounding hardcore (the later releases). the happy hardcore sound has evolved. there's no more chipmunk vocals really. most the lyrics are sung by "real singers", at a normal tempo. sure, it's not for everyone, but you just gotta let your jaded guard down every once in a while and give it a chance. a lot of people like it, because it has energy, and a positive vibe (even if some of that is phony). the best example is when a guy like bezerker plays around here. he plays total cheese, and people go nuts for it. then they go home and pretend it never happened. :)
and there's gabba and hardcore techno. which is "real hardcore" as some say. distorted 909s that i can handle when i'm in the mood. i generally like it in smaller doses.
hardcore, basically, doesn't give a **** and that's what i like about it. you'll hear a lot of experimental tracks even though a lot of it is really formulaic (like in any genre). listening to hardcore, you'll hear some wicked DNB breakdowns in tracks. you'll hear hip hop samples, and a breakbeat at half the speed every once in a while to give it a hip hop vibe. you'll hear distorted 909s, cheesey vocals, euphoric trance lines. you'll hear gabba thrown into happy core and vice versa. you'll hear piano riffs. and you'll hera the evil, antisocial gabba and hardcore techno. but it's all under one roof. there's a lot of bleeding in the genre, a lot of experimentation, a lot of variety. and an attitude at the parties that can't be beat (and no, it's not an e-puddle. misconception!).
in the UK, hardcore is making a comeback. it's selling pretty well, the raves are packed. a good example is that Nukleuz recently put out a hardcore EP as an experiment. it outsold all of their hardhouse/nrg/hard trance releases. now nukleuz is putting out more hardcore EPs because it's gained acceptance and because a lof ot it is quite good.
hardcore also found it's way onto the radio in the UK, on Radio 1, thanks to John Peel. John Peel, if you don't know, is the legendary DJ who recently passed away, who gave a lot of musicians their break. He liked the hardcore sound and gave it time. CLSM made a track called "john peel (is not enough)" which i think got into the charts over there and found legendary status immediately.
CLSM is a couple year old hardcore act with Jon Doe behind the steering wheel. Jon Doe as you hard house heads would know is one of the best hard dance producers out there. He put his skills into hardcore, and has put out two unmixed albums: "hardcore material" and "transmission to mars." he's worked with artists like MC Bello B of the KLF. his tracks are superbly produced, and their live PA show is insane.
i just typed a lot but that point is that hardcore is alive and well right now, and grossly misunderstood around here. it's not everyone's cup of tea, but the music hasn't been given a chance thanks to the "anabolic frolic"-centered view of most people--all they know is "happy2bhardcore." there's a lot more out there, and more people would like it if they heard it.
here's my listening suggestions:
- luna-c - owner of the legendary kniteforce records. mixes up all the hardcore, and puts out all styles on his label KFA (kniteforce again). www.kniteforce.co.uk
- panacea - been teaming up with luna-c and doing work for kniteforce records. has some gabba sounds, some hardcore drum and bass, and some pendulum-ey type DNB which is really nice and a lot of DNB heads would probably like. www.kniteforce.co.uk
- CLSM - label and act masterminded by Jon Doe. puts out well producsed hardcore of all kinds. www.clsm.net
- kevin energy - kind of the don of freeform (as far as the popularity of his name). runs the nu energy collective, which is a collective of hardcore labels that focus mainly on freeform, mostly. also runs a record distribution business. a top notch DJ. www.nu-energy.co.uk
- alek szahala - heading up the finnish sound of freeform which sounds like manic psy trance. awesome stuff. www.finrg.com
- sy and unknown - happy hardcore djs who can scratch. kept things away from the trancey sound more than most the big hardcore producers. www.quoshrecords.co.uk
- brisk and ham - run the next generation label together. synth backed hardcore that destroys dance floors. very well produced. almost all the tracks become anthems. also run the hard dance label stimulant records under the moniker "stimulate djs." http://www.nextgenerationrecords.co.uk/
in the USA:
- ac slater - runs the pitched up label. all kinds of hardcore released on the label. produces mainly freeform himself, but has a few breakbeat release. www.pitchedup.net
- sunrize - helps run pitched up. works with next generation. does mainly happier stuff but still some freeform and breakbeat.
- cloudskipper, no left turn - west coast hardcore dons. www.liquidvinyldjs.com

after making the last post a couple hours ago, i was talking to emily and i decided i should make a mix of all the stuff i was talking about up there.
this mix obviously isn't very polished since I just hit the record button and never turned back with no forethought until i was behind the decks. but it turned out pretty well. the goal of it was to play all the kinds of hardcore i talked about, and avoid the cheesey crap people associate with hardcore. there's, by design, a little cheese, including the first track, but otherwise it has: the evolving trancier sound of hardcore, freeform (hard trance that's faster and harder), finnish hardcore (psy trance that if faster and harder), breakbeat hardcore, and whatever else you can get picky about.
so, here's the track listing (i think it's full). i will kinda break it down by genre with some time points so people can jump ahead if they don't like what htey're hearing and want to try somethign else.

so, yeah... if i notice any errors in the track listing i will update them. i know you're all not gonna like this. but i think there's some stuff in there that will appeal to a lot of people, especially people into uk hardhouse/hard trance/nrg stuff.
anyway, feedback is welcome. but this mix was less to display skill and more to give you lot some hardcore education. so if you like any tracks, and you never listen to hardcore, than go ahead and say so.

Any hardcore fan will appreciate you doing this, your right some people do need education.
I also agree with you saying that hardcore is coming back in the UK, ive seen it for myself, raves being packed and generally hear the music a lot more than I used to. Ive also noticed that pills are coming back, which is a good thing for the most part, as long as people are sensible. Looks like 2005 could be a hardcore revolution... :)

People always grief our little scene, its like its cool to hate hardcore.
I hope some of them actually listen to your mix, so at least they know what hardcore is. Maybe you will convert some hardcore haters.
