hey what stops people from calling themselves gammer or scott brown if they wanted to.
i had my name since 2000 and lately ive been seeing it all over the net, basically i want to be the rightful owner of my name but what do i have to do.
i read somewhere that once a track is made with the name it is automatically copyrighted.
does anyone know about this?

There is a difference between copyright and a trade mark... You would need to trademark your name if you wanted no one else to use it. To trade mark it you would have to show evidence that you "invented" that name and were the first person to use it....
Then you would have a hell of a time trying to enforce your trademark...
It terms of artists with the same name, it is different to other name clashes (like companies for example)... it does not actually go on who had the name longer it actually goes on who has the most published records.
it's all hardcore.

^^ Exactly. I'm sure most artists names are used by other people.

Im sure most people would wish that not to happen. I know ive seen my name NeXuS used alot, in the hhc scene AND in other places (eg: there are some games out with the name nexus :-\ ). But what can you do? If you are really serious about it i guess you could get in contact with that person and maybe work somthing out. Or do it through a legal way and try and own it. Either way its gonna be a hassle and unless it becomes a big problem, my advice: live with it

Or, when first choosing a name, make up some bizarre one which nobody else would even think to use...
