umm yeah they do, you should kill the source of that rumour =P
it wasn't until recently that the irish government decided they could cash in on the holiday...seeing as how most of the rest of the world saw it as a time to get drunk =P

Yes the teller of that rumour is clearly mistaken!
Saint Patrick was the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland who is credited with bringing christianity to Ireland. So as Irelands patron saint he is clearly going to be celebrated in Ireland, and naturally they have more right than anyone to celebrate his achievments.

I find the english fasination with this day very odd. They celebrate St patricks day but don't do anything on st georges day.

No, you muppet! As in many old pagan religions, serpent symbols were common and often worshipped. Driving the snakes from Ireland was probably symbolic of putting an end to that pagan practice.
