Hey everyone,

My 18th birthday is coming up and i've been told I can have any gift I want. I have chosen a set of decks, but haven't got the greatest knowledge so was wondering if any of you could help me.

I am considering getting CD decks. As I do not have any Vinyls at all, yet quite a few Hardcore CDs, I would be able to use those/copys of those. These decks will be for personal use only, I do not want to go out doing sets or anything like that, well not yet anyway. I just want to make my own mixes and my own music.

I need the cheapest option in the long run - Vinyls I would have to go out and buy, whereas CD's I already have plenty of.

I have no experience with mixing at all, but everyone has to start somewhere. Would any of you be able to weigh up the pro's and con's between vinyl and CD decks, or point me in the direction of some decks that would be right for me? (I live in the UK, so no US links if you can help it)

Thanks a lot in advance.

Make sure your CD's are unmixed...

Pioneer CDJ-200 are always a good bet

Depends on your budget really,

As for Vinyl Vs Cds, thats an endless debate, but for playing on, most CDJ's do the beatmatching for you and if you start on Vinyl Decks you learn how to beatmatch just through your own hearing rather than "cheating" with beatcounters etc well thats my opinion anyway

And i think this is posted in the wrong area

There ya go right there...thats your answer :) If you wanna make your own music you can burn it to a disk then mix on your CD Dex. If you have MAD talent and money of course you could always get vinyl and Press your own music. But having CD's is the easier alternative to people who want to make their own music and then mix it.

Sorry for posting in the wrong area.

As well as making my own music and mixing it i'd also like to do mixes of other songs, not just my own stuff that I would do on a keyboard or something simlar.

Lucy, could you give me an idea of where I could purchase each of the decks you listed and what price I would be looking at?

http://www.htfr.com/more-info/?catno=MR149815 - CDJ 200

Sorry for even commenting on the 1000mkII because they are astronomical.

http://www.htfr.com/cddecks/ have a look round there, see what you like the looks of, ask people for there opinions, im not saying buy off there because HTFR are wankers and you can always buy second hand :)

i suggest buy the vinyl turntables. It doesn't sound like your fully serious about producing your own music so u dont have any need for the Cdj's. I know u probably hav alot of tracks on CD but i presume they are mixed compelations such as bonkers, u can use premixed cd's but it is tough to get it right and seeings your just starting out, you really will be struggling.

vinyl will be the best in the long-run because if you choose cds i fear they will just go to waste and you will sell them

You can get vinyl in the shops for £4 to £7
And getting cds, you might have to get in a album so tha might cost more than £10 and if u dont want to pay it,ll take time to burn it of so your best off getting turntables

If you're on a budget, i would go for the unmixed cd's, it's so much cheaper.

As for the decks..

I would say, try vinyl & cd decks out first (if you can), and see which one you prefer. After all, it's a big investment if you don't enjoy whatever you get.

I'm on a tight budget and don't have the greatest knowledge of decks. I was thinking of waiting another year maybe and during that time I could do a bit of research on them.

Another problem then....

Driving lessons or a custom made stoke flag?

I much prefer mixing vinyl but CD mixing is a lot cheaper. I get all my vinyl off the internat, theres loads of UK based record shops so its not a problem, but if you compare paying £5 - £7 a record with buying a CD of about 10 tunes for £12 you can see the difference in price.

Have any of your mates got any decks you could have a go on? That might give you an idea of how much you like it and hopefully compare cd's to vinyl.

Don't buy any equipment from HTFR they're well overpriced. Shop around for a good deal, buy DJ mag and look at all the setups in the back, then phone the shops and see what offers they can give you. I'd recommend saphires and guildford sound and light as shops, they've done me well in the past.

Hope this helps, but definelty get some, then you can be as good a DJ as me lol!

basically u have 2 options , if i were u i would def go vinyl because u aint a dj if u dont know how to mix vinyl simple as that. and also because vinly is what a dj is all about. sure cdj's are awesome but u get cdj's only after u know how to mix vinyl and need mp3 format.

ya buying vinyl is expensive, ive spent around $1700 on vinyl and i got around 200. my setup cpst around $1900 like 4 years ago. 2 techs m3d's, pioneer djm-500 ortofone nightclub carts. a $350 amp, and 300 for 12 inch sub speakers. 3 pairs of headphones = 450 (mdr-7000)

= 4700 and thats not including all my production stuff, computer, keyboard, monitors, appz(warez)

if your serious your gonna spend more then that so i suggest u get vinyl.

these are the options.

2 x technics vinyl decks. with any mixer and carts + headphones + soundsystem.

or

2 x pioneers decks or any cd decks. mixer.

lol you'd do well to break 'em, especially the vinyl lol.

Don't think it would really help you much trying 'em out in HMV anyway as you can't mix on them or owt, just play the record, so not much help. You've just gotta think how much you want them really, and if you're willing to pay the money. I'd reccomend getting a shit pair of decks and a mixer if your not sure and going from there, if you don't like it then you can sell them and havn't lost too much. My first setup was, like, £200 for some belt drive decks and from there I could tell I wanted some better stuff and moved onwards and upwards. Or something like that lol.
