I've been been through shit similar to that but not that scary. Maybe you should try walking along with others, friends, etc. You're fortunate you're not a girl.

Another angle to look at it:
"Returning from work". So what do you do? I assume you were dressed "normally" and not like a clubber?
Maybe the guy was just lost and too scared of asking someone for directions? Some people just don't know how to handle themselves when faced with asking a total stranger something, even something simple. Were you the only person about? Was it a cheap shitty car or was it decent i.e. the guy was of sound enough mind to make some dosh. Maybe he was scared of asking someone for directions cos the last time he had his car nicked. etc. etc. etc.
There could be any number of reasons, but the point is you don't know what he was like, what he was really doing, what he was thinking. You only have YOUR perspective to go on and his was almost certainly different - as all perspectives are different. Just like he didn't know what you were thinking and maybe had no idea he was freaking you out?
I know what you mean though, sh!ts you right up.

I think you can tell when someone is looking for directions...They don't follow you for a mile before asking. Also, when someone drives past, strangely slow (Kerb crawling) during a bright morning, looking over their shoulder and STARING at you as they drive by...You only expect the worst.
There are a lot of things I should have done, but at the time....I wasn't exactly thinking straight. I tried hard to avoid eye contact with the person and tried to show that they didn't intimidate me.
Sure, I 'may' have got the wrong message...But I highly doubt it though.
It was obvious following...or so it seemed!
For someone to really randomly turn (They were driving the opposite direction at the time), drive past slowly, wait for you to go by, stare at you and wait for you to go on a bit, slowly follow-staring as they go past, and wait ahead for you again...far too suspicious.
Always expect the worst at times like that. I managed to loose him by walking into an estate (To which he also followed!) and legging it out a side road before the car came into view.
Also seeing him drive by after it all - (From driving around in a loop to come back where he lost me) ...was quite disturbing!!

Theres some proper weirdos out there. My daughter was walking home one night in daylight and this man in a van slowed down and said 'Boo' to her which frightened the life out of her. They get some sort of sick perverted feelins dont they? they want there heads checkin!

nah there aint that many weirdos about its just how u view them! theres some pretty sad ppl out tho.... I was walkin home on my own one afternoon and I can recall this army vehicle thing goin past with two fittes in their uniform drivin it, they ruined it for themselves though by stopping and asking me where the RAF camp is! and to make it worse they continued by asking if I wanted to show them...pathetic! I wonder how many people they have used that line on

hell something like that happened to me a few a mates, some gypo's in their transit van stopped next to us when we were talking to one of my mates brother and his friend asking us if we knew where the 'speed factory' was?!
i was thinking 'wtf?!, a speed factory round here!' (it is a really nice area, they had obviously got it all wrong, still funny as hell though)

Thats really shit, i honestly feel for you and know how you feel, and its not something you can just brush off, like everyone said it could of been a number of things, but whatever it was it wasnt right.
Im just glad your ok, you hear about stuff like this all the time, when i was at school we used to get loads of letters out saying "beware of a man in a blue escort he followed some girls home last night" etc etc
Hopefully its a warning to everyone, its not just girls that stuff like this happen too.
