Every finnish male has to go to army for 6-12 months (Women can go volunteerly). If you dont want to go, you can do civilian service, witch 13 months working free for the government. If you refuse to do neither, then its 6 months in jail.

Thats riduculous making people conscript, perhaps if finland were at war,
Are there not big protest about it or do people just get on with it?

And election day they all went to vote even when threatened by insurgents.

So if you were living there you'd rather live under a totalitarian regime than under a democracy were you get the vote, more rights, right to a fair trial

alot of that crowd were americans

Its military service to defend our independence. Its not like in e.g. UK, where you could have to invade another country. As much as i hate army, the idea of being forced to do military training, it is necessary. There are no protest against it as far as i know, dont think there ever has been. In general the finnish people want to defend their country. Not many really wants to go to army, usually people just see it as something that they "have to do". You have to remember, for us to have "belivable army" everyone has to go there, as this aint a big country :p

Its rather new and ive only read some things on the news. Basicly the point is to be a EU military force, that can be deplyed quickly to anywhere in case of a conflict. Mainly for peacekeeping. The aim is to have about 60,000 troops from EU countrys. Also ive read that it might be that they wount be needing an UN mandatory when going for a mission, this to avoid the delays from the bureaucracy. But there arent yet many examples how it really will work.

Not really after Soviet Union. I usually say its stupid to pay for an army when there are no threats near. But the world can change quickly, what if there comes a threat? How long would it take to fully build the army back up again? The thing is, we dont have a large country, we couldnt have a big enough force in peacetime the same way as e.g. UK can.

They're all tramps in that damm country and have no need to be here blow them ****ers away, least the US know how it's done. They should just annihiliate that country, take over and show whos boss.

I'd happily go over on the US side and help them do it.

here's an angle i havnt heard before really

why are the us in there at all?
i mean everybody runs around with gun right?
if the people really wanted democracy they should be willing to fight for it, which means if the us pulled out, and insurgents started killing off the police, the public should step up and fight for what they belive in. all across Canada's history and the U.S's history theres times when we have fought for freedom, isnt it about time other people took up the fight for their own goddamn freedom??

the American troops dont need to fight for the freedom, when they get home they have all the freedoms they are fighting for over in iraq. so in effect they are fighting for no benefit to them. and i wouldnt be suprised with hostilities towards America if after American troops pulled out the government started snubing the American and shit.

its a sad world we live in these days

personally i believe that the US is there just because the leaders are that fat headed. TO me i think they beleive that because democracy is working for them that they should impose it onto other 'less fortunate countries' (sarcasm). And this si why they are takign so long over there. THe Citizens of iraq don't have a strong enough will to change their gov't form yet. THey were content with what they had, that and its part of their beleifs, and belief is a VERY powerful thing
