you have to have a atpe player with a line out, and a sound card on ur pc with a line in, a cable to join the two and the software to record the audio from the soundcard. you also need a lot of patience cause you have have to let the tapes play right through so it takes ages.
good luck

I had a similar problem, only that i wanted to record vinyls. But its basicly the same thing. The software recommendations and what software i ended getting can be found there ->
http://www.happyhardcore.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=22009 As for attaching your tapeplayer to your PC, it would be good if the tape player had a lineout. Most stereos should have one. You can also connect through the phones plug, but i wouldnt trust it to be as good sound quality wise. As for the PC end. Pretty much every motherboard has integrated soundcard with line out/in and mic in. Just attach the cable to line in. For recording you need a software, and that is covered on that topic of which link i posted.

On occasions like this, having a CD recorder comes in really handy

That's what I was going to suggest.
Much easier to get a dual deck CD recorder with analogue inputs. You can record the tape or vinyl straight to CD and rip it to mp3 from there.
