Whew. I could go on forever. Basically, "freeform" is a darker, more musical side to hardcore. It has its own different variations, but basically I can only say listen to artists that produce it: Kevin Energy, K Complex, CLSM, Cube::Hard, Sharkey, AMS, Robbie Long, Stormtrooper, Tazz, Arkitech, or go towww.nuenergy.co.uk to learn more about this genre, as they are the best source for information. Also check places like www.the-clsm.co.uk.

In terms of other types, there is upfront (less vocals more dance hard beats): try Sy & Unknown or Dougal & Gammer or wow...um...anything. Scott Brown is great too. Brisk, Ham, and Vagabond are excellent.

And then there is the more trancy, vocal type of hardcore: Breeze & Styles, some Hixxy...and more hard house type things.

Then there is Gabber or Dutch Hardcore. Check out Scott Brown's gabber, Neophyte, Evil Activities, and others. This style takes some getting used to, but it is a cornerstone of the hardcore scene and a wonderful type of hardcore. Knightmare knows more about this.

Also, you might be interested in breakbeat hardcore. Check
www.all-4-1.co.uk for information on that. Artists like Luna-C, Panacea, Wizbit, Cube::Hard, CLSM, Stormtrooper, Robbie Long, Ham, Ponder, Top Cat, all produce this genre.

Remember, as DJ Silver says: It's all hardcore.

freeform is basically trancecore with a new name. trancecore stopped around 98-99 and freeform started in 2000

I don't really know why they call it freeform. It's basically trance mixed breakbeats.

An amazing branch of hardcore, love it!

Try and get hold of some of Kevin Energy's material.

hmn. i always thought upfront is trancy cheezy hardcore, like Hixxy, Euphoria, Sy & Unknown, Jess, some Scott Brown songs... well basically what leto said. but i would never put VAGABOND and Dougal & Gammer in the same spot, because theyre not even the same as those artist written above. just for example, Xtreme, STOMP, 3000 cycles, Black mamba, Chemicals in motion (basically all songs from Vagabond are hard shit, not even close to upfront as i see it.. or?).. thats a bit harder in my opinion.

on the other hand, they have trancy songs as well :s ah for christ sake, you get so confused what is what and what someone wants to be or make.

as said Freeform is modern Trancecore. The music's evolved to a point where it is a new sub-genre.

now im all for basic pidgeon holing but dont go much further than the three in UK Hardcore: Upfront, Freeform & Breakbeat. Exessive pidgeon holing just confuses things.

All 4-1.co.uk is a shop. Not a source of information.
But you can link to the idr, kniteforce and clsm sites from there and get info from them.

Upfront isn't a genre, upfront means new. So you could say 'all the DJ's here are playing as upfront as possible' etc etc...

good point but then again:

Freeform is governed by production rules, thus making it NOT Free Form (meaning anything goes).

Hardcore isn't exactly Hard is it? Theres harder stuff out there.

Sorry I feel by saying Upfront that im free from pedantic comments. Surely you can see that by Upfront I mean the more popular side of Happy Hardcore. Raverbaby, Evolution, Quosh etc etc etc etc.

Call it what you will, theres still only three real sub-genres.
