I enjoyed CX too...maybe it was just me. It had some real tunes on there. A little too slow though, but I can deal with that.
What whispering said hit the point too.

agreed that softcore is ********, but thers plenty of dance music that has a harder core than happy hardcore. too many people seem to think fast = hard but thats ********. theres techno with harder beats than happy hardcore, hard nrg with harder beats. pushing the tempo to 180 doesnt make it any harder, just faster.

and regards whoever said "hardcore was what it was called before happy hardcore". think about it m8, the original hardcore has almost no connections to modern "hardcore". it all stems from the happy hardcore era. dnb stems from the old hardcore, does that mean it is? nah, does it hell. its a different genre.

now look at this, this is how the music's been named:

Hardcore >>> Happy Hardcore >>> Hardcore. How can you regress back to hardcore when the music hasn't regress but in fact used happy hardcore as its basis for evolution?

You know what I dont like the term Homo Sapien, im gonna go back to calling myself an ape because I evolved from an ape. Sounds daft but exactly what you're doing?

it seems apparant to me that people are ashamed of the "happy" term because [puts on whiny voice] "the other genres pick on me".

....ho hum....

When I were a lad, back in the dim distant past of 1989/90, when Rave's were developing and Jungle/Rave was the latest thing,
it was called 'Hardcore'.

There were no CDs, only vinyl and tapes, 'Jungle' (Jungle Is Massive!) and/or 'Hardcore'.

There was NO 'Happy Hardcore'. NO 'Gabber'. NO F'all else.

'Hardcore' was a generic term for all of it.

Everything 'Hardcore' has evolved from that.

I was there. I remember it well.

and djDMS is right, "this topic is shit".

^^^^ I'll third what DMS and Ionosphere said. Sub-genres are the invention of the music media press, andare only there to make journalist's lives easier

Well as you can see they all sound different, so if they were called just hardcore then it would be confusing.

late reply by me but i was making the assumption this thread was stupid by the author, i stand corrected, it was insanely greater than stupid, it was G.W.Bush stupid.

personally i like subcatergories as it makes my life so much ****ing easier when i want to find something. to people saying sub-catergories are the devil you're just as big culprits as all the others as technically hardcore is just another sub-catergory of music

I don't think that we're saying that sub-catagories are stupid, at least I'm not.

You're right, it helps to find stuff.

The problem is people arguing the toss over what's what when they don't know the full history.

The blind leading the blind is very confusing.

....and this topic is still shit.

....so why'm I here? ....mmm.... wtf?

didn't say you were man

i was aiming it at the people going 'you shouldn't put names on things, after all it is all hardcore, save the whales and all that jazz whilst we're at it' without realising they're sub-catergorising it anyways. shut up you damn hippies of the music world!!!

what tend to be the best songs are the songs that you can't catergorise/sub-catergorise

EDIT:

you use the term 'read' very frivolously DMS? i thought they just skimmed through looking at the topless pictures

whatever the sun said just believe the exact opposite and you'd be right. so unless it said hardcore is grossily unpopular in some outstandingly witty pun a 6 year old wrote then hardcore isn't popular

by the way DMS, stop reading shite newspapers

I think we should make as much labels as long as it makes sence. if you can actually say that a certain style has certain characteristics then go ahead and label it but don't go labeling EVERY single difference in a track a different style. cuz the you might not want to title tracks anymore but just label it a new style and play that over and over again.

just saying, if it's different enough to be a style on it's own, then go ahead, if not then never mind

Sorry, by sub-genres I should really have written sub-sub-genres. Yes, I see the need to go from music, to Hardcore, and then split into freeform, happy, Gabber, UK/Upfront/whatever you want to call it, but things tend to get a bit silly after that. I mean, what makes a track "acidcore" rather than freeform? And then you get (not so much in Hardcore, butin other genres certainly) tracks where people try and combine genre names and blatantly make something up like progressive-acid-breakbeat-spongebobsquarepants-core (I can see Ionosphere jotting down inspiration notes for their next track ;-) ). Thats what gets on my wick. I think rapcore and softcore come under this category too.
