Was just wondering if anyone else is finding some of the hardcore out there really badly mastered. A lot of the small labels which are part of the nu nrg collective are so soft or lacking bass and crispness in sounds. What causes tracks to come out on vinyl like this? I never buy any of them cause it's just a waste of money. They sound really bad when you mix them into a well pressed record. Makes you sound like your levels are out of wack. I think if you release a record it's definatly worth getting it mastered. You listen to releases on Raver Baby, Quosh, Essential Platinum, Next Generation, Blatant Beats, Thin N Crispy, Evolution etc and it's rare to hear their releases badly recorded. This is one of the reasons their still going strong after so long. As Brisk once said in an interview QUALITY before quantity.

I don't find it a major problem at all and I buy from most of the minor labels... If you don't buy them how do you know there badly mastered? Are you making that assumption from a crap quality compressed mp3 sample file on an internet record shop? I've had records that I may need to put the gain up a bit on but that's really not a major problem.

Who's to say that some of the tracks are not supposed to be like that.
If you only play stuff that doesnt require you to adjust your mixer then you maybe missing out.
Also surely the bigger labels have more money to spend on each release meaning that they can probably afford to spend more on mastering.

Haha... only one I didn't have to ajust the gain are most of the records from Scott brown... If I play my "pure" hardcore like Gabber, I'm ajusting most of the time... That's the joy of using your decks, if you have any... The difficulty to get it right is most forfilling
Bad bad stuff... there is no bad stuff I suppose. It's just what you like... I like gabber, doesn't mean the whole world like it too.. matter of taste as well
At least that's my point of view

i agree in some ways... its just how hardcores progress and some artists and labels and rushing there work just to get it out there!!!
like i stated before... for some artists it seams its all about the money these days! Not as much about the music! <<<< this ent hardcore!
Ahwell tho... not my problem.. I'm too busy working on my own stuff and keeping it under wraps... and how am i to complain about bad mastering... i think any producer has done it at some point... there working away so hard on a tune and your on like your 20th god damb export of trying to master it perfect (narr still not happening) and you just think **** IT!!! its sounds as good as I'm gonna get it!
But i guess it would be easyer for a pro... to make a tune perfect... th've been doing it for years and know all the odd little tricks around making a tune sound good... like filters on your hats and a bit of stero enhasment here and there... but ahwell... intill i get my decks in the summer i can;t really complain :D

I've bought a couple of tunes in the past which have been like this. Don't buy them anymore though. Have learn't my lesson:) There most definatly not mp3s either. Just normal pressed vinyl. Just believe in quality in my hardcore
By the way on another topic, think silver will be a very wanted man with his own pressing plant. There is said to be a shortage of vinyl pressing plants now that Alphamagic is gone.

course they do, and it comes down to experience aswell i think.
Evo's i'd say are the best mastered of the uk hardcore and scott browns always been amazing at it, mix one of his in after nearly any other label and every beat sounds crisper and clearer.
Another thing you can see how some of the dutch big boys have more money again, another step up in quality and then trance aswell.
Not saying some up n comings arent getting it right, but it makes sense if theres less cash that some things wont be as good. Some of the new makina has been very poor quality, the adn and uptempo's from a few years ago when it was bigger in spain were a lot better.

Yep, think your right. Think a good way for an up n commer to start is on one of the big labels. Just look how good Gammer, Re-Con, Joey Riot and Vagabond produce. Have all been taught well.

Nonsense, Alphamagic were distruibutors, not a pressing plant.

Utter Pishposh. Re-Con has been producing for Scouse House for a while (read: YEARS) and has moved to hardcore. Vagabond originally was an engineer for Storm Trax and did a fair amount of tracks with them.
Learning from a mentor & starting on a big label are different things though, but having a mentor certainly helps. Its helping me now!
