Right I'm hoping some of you are computer geniuses because I have a problem with my laptop.
When I bought this laptop it came with a pre-installed anti-virus called CA etrust. When I came to uni, I had to connect the laptop to the network, but I had to install another piece of anti-virus software (Mcafee) to be able to get onto the netwrok, and therefore the internet. However when this happens there is some kind of conflict and the laptop runs very slowly. I figured that I needed to uninstall one of the software to get it to run properly again. HOWEVER
I have uninstalled Mcafee from the add/remove programs list, but it is still present on m computer and still loads up, so I can't get rid of it. The other one, eTrust, will not uninstall at all, as when I go through the add/remove programs and click on uninstall, the laptop crashes.
So basically I'm stuck with a laptop with two anti-virus software and can't get rid of either. (PS I cannot use system restore as there are no restore points before the installation of mcafee)

hmmm. try downloading crapcleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/
its a 3rd party program for cleaning temporary files, cleaning the registry and unistalling programs. It usually seems to work a hell of a lot better than the MS unistaller (no suprise there).
i would try and delete both of them, and use the registry cleaner on that program to get rid of any traces. then delete any folders related to the programs. then just reinstall the virus cleaner you want to use.
thats my advice anyway, no guarantees

Maybe you need to delete Mcafee from the program files folder and/or the registry?
Have you restarted your PC since your emoved it?

first off
http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq.asp?frames=1&docid=71541&CategoryId=245&chat=&pf=1 then http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq.asp?frames=1&docid=71525&CategoryId=245&chat=&pf=1 if that doesnt shut it up then go: Start > Run > type msconfig click on the "Services" then tick "hide all microsoft services" then untick anything that says "mcafee" on it. then click the "startup" tab - this is where you can turn on and off the programs that start up when your computer boots without doing any damage to the registry (you can also turn them back on). turn off anything in there that says "mcafee" weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

You are all legends! Crapcleaner managed to get rid of eTrust for me, and the manual uninstall worked for mcafee, so now I'm virus software free, but the ironic thing is my laptop is running well faster.
You have saved me a lot of hardship and have made it easier to do my coursework on time, so I'm really grateful for your advice. Thankyou

^^ Never use net without an antivirus and firewall program. You will get viruses within 5 minutes, if you dont have one id suggest getting Kerio as a firewall, but dont remember any good free anti virus programs, i use F-Secure, but Norton is also good, MacAfee is crap.

i found that kerio had a few bugs... i can recommend AVG from Grisoft as a free antivirus software... its not a major resource hog like Norton or macafee

AVG is what i use, does the job!
i dont actually have firewall software, i use my router for that, and keep it set very tightly lol.
dont forget to keep something like Ad-Aware (google it) handy and give that a regular run maybe once a week. spyware can cause a load of crap too :( wich anti virus and firewalls wont stop.

try hitman pro 2. free anti-virus with like 10 anti-virus and spyware programs rolled into one. very good and not a resource hog as it doesn't actually run until you open it. you probably need one running all the time to catch stuff as it tried to come on, for free ones go to http://www.majorgeeks.com plenty there. you could also get a cracked full version of any anti-virus but haven't got any cracked stuff in ages, wouldn't be able to help there

i was without virus protection for just over two months, just running a firewall on its own cause i was far too lazy, came to run virus scans a few days ago - nothing, found 23 cookies and that was it.
im running antivirus software now, ewido and kaspersky firewall.
i like firewalls.
