whats the best way to get used to it?
i went in a dj comp and there was no monitor (well there was but it was round the corner and it was just part of the main system so i couldnt adjust the volume) and it really threw me. ive been used to mixing with monitors right infront of me then went to this and didnt know what to do (no split cue on the mixer)
since then ive hooked up a big 15" speaker i had at home and put it at my door facing into another room so there is a really bad delay and im trying to get used to it this way, there must be a better way than this though cause its takin the fun out of mixing!
any help would be welcome :)

Hip hop sometimes doesn't have a monitors because it's easier to mix. I had the same problem last weekend when I was DJing a drift car event in Tokyo... totally cool I might add... You need to mix in your headphones, it's not the best but it's all you can do, if the mixer has a cue / master knob use that, if not you will have to have both channels in your headphones and turn off and on (this is what I do) the channel cue select to hear the difference between the channels.

Yeah I allways use my headphones throughout the whole mix if there is no monitor. Whoever sets up a party/dj comp without a decent monitor/s needs a kick in the head though IMO ;)

at the time my headphones only worked on one side so i was sticking my head round the corner to hear the closest speaker (whilst trying not to pull the mixer off the table with my 1m long cord lol)
got a new lead now anyway so phones are working right!
so you guys dont have a method for learning to mix with a delay other than using ur phones?

It's near impossible in really bad conditions mate your gonna get your mix much better going through the phones. If you think about it your going to hear everything at least twice, when it gets to your ears from the speakers and again when it bounces back off the wall behind you etc etc. Putting a monitor right next to you stops you from hearing the sound getting echoed round the room. If your hearing it more than once how do you tell if it's the record your bringing in that's out of time or an off beat echo of a good mix? Much easier just to use phones.

yeah jax,
when im mixing with no monitor i use the master cue switch on my mixer, keep my headphones on the whole time, up really loud and use the Send function to hear the mix.
I find that even with a monitor a lot of the time i use this technique anyway, it helps a lot to get used to it, just makes life a little easier in certain situations.
