my hard drive which had all my music, videos, games, files (it had 75 gb worth of stuff) has just died for no apparent reason! it completely wiped itself in the period of 30 minutes.

:(

and to make matters worse i got a history AS level in about an hour.

Sorry to hear man that sucks.

I really should back up myself... It's one of those things where you think "it'll never happen to me".

Does anyone back up their entire hard drive to anything like bi-weekly, monthly or something? How long would that take and whats the best format to back it up to?

The best way to backup if you can afford it is to have SATA drives running mirrored - so that they mirror each other and if one dies the second should be identical.

Failing that If you have a big enough hard disc or even better yet a second hard disc - take a Nortons Ghost image of your entire machine onto the secondary hard disc - Again this will restore your computer exactly how it was to the time of when you took the image.

Timewsie to image a whole drive depends on the spec of your computer and of course, just how big the data is that you're imaging.

The nortons Ghost images can be compressed.

Cheers mate I'll look into that :) I could spare a bit of money for the sake of not losing everything on my computer... I don't have any of my production software or files backed up ATM I've actually payed for it all as well so it's not just a case of downloading it again.

Belt and Braces is best.

Back-up to another HD as Simon suggested and if you're wise you'll back-up each Song file to CD or DVD.

That way when your whole computer system explodes, is stolen etc etc the really important stuff (your Music)

is locked away somewhere else, safe and sound.

It's relatively easy to replace a computer but it's not easy to replace all of your creations.

Good idea I have the final tracks on cd's but I guess I should put the save file on the same disk. Extra work Is the last thing I need at the mo but it's got to be done.

Hmmm there is a virus going around by email with subject Invitation. It corrupts the main sector of the harddisk. It was on CNN or something like that. Maybe it was this???

yeah im fully aware i shouldve backed up. Im pretty sure it wasnt hacked, i keep my pc in pretty tip top shape (how geeky :P) and although i didnt have the firewall turned on i usually have it turned on

simon: i think multiple sata drives is known as a raid array, although im not sure. that would be good but tbh i cannot afford it. i cant even afford a hard drive to back up to!

ah well at the minute im searching for illegal ways to recover the data (its bad i know but i'm skint)
