Moved up to Aberdeen not long ago after graduating and as yet have no job.
Can anyone tell me exactly how to claim the dole?
Are you obliged to take any job they throw at you or do you have a big say in it (I'm not taking any other job but IT related)?
How much do you get?

To claim it you need to go to your local Jobseekers office (job centre), or even better, find out the number for your local one, and say you want to make a claim for Jobseekers Allowance.
You have to sign an agreement saying you are willing to do specific kinds of jobs (which will be specified in the interview), but they would would probably make you look for more than just IT related jobs. Usually, you just have 3 peices of evidence showing that you have looked for work, but you don't have to do those jobs. At other times they will look for jobs for you, and as far as i know you have to apply for those (but if you don't want to do them apply badly :P).
In England it's £45 aweek generally :)

Yeah, I think I've checked out nearly every job search engine but to no avail. So far I've applied for 3 jobs (2 of which have just gone on hold), I'm with 5 different recruitment agencies in Aberdeen - all of which suck at finding me a job. It sucks being a fresh graduate as I have dick-all experience in IT and amost every position expects experience.
Ah well, cheers for the help guys! Much appreciated!!

Aye, it's a sad case of workplace catch 22. Happens to us all, you'll find someone who'll take you on eventually, you just got to stick at it.
As for the jobseekers, my bro recently graduated from uni & had to put a claim in, he said they do it all by the phone's in the job centre now...I've no idea myself as I've been working for two years now, but last time I had to claim it was the way HardGget said.
Good luck B.C. and stick at it mate.

gah it sucks doesnt it, the whole employers seeking ppl with experience, but i agree with Mortis, keep at it, maybe do some voluntary stuff to get a bit of experience up your sleeve... may sound a bit lame and you might think you dont want to part with your time by doing voluntary work, but employers love to see that you have done voluntary work. its also a good way to get the experience. i dont know what area of IT you are in.... but if you have done any of your own personal projects eg web design or building comps or whatever it may be, use that to your advantage for sure, even if its doing maintenance work for a friend or whatever, this all counts towards experience :)
good luck with it all :)

Be careful with those work agencies cos they take a slice of what you earn!

Aye, i understand that one... i went through the same problem myself after i graduated. I finally found one at a school through a friends mum, and after 4 months i'm already being headhunted, so the catch is trying to get that first job. I might also suggest doing an MCSE or equivalent? i'm about to start one myself, and they really pay off in the end... just more study :(
In England i remember my older bro started off in the NHS as a systems techie... not the most glamourous job, but a starts a start, and the pay's not half bad!

Thats awful for you am sorry to hear that Sk8SiM!
You know back in my home town you used to get guys and gals going into the dole building with cans of strong ale demanding crisis loans!
And you know what they were given them!
How the hell your expected to live on £34 a week is just unbelievable!
I hope you have some luck in finding a job that you want to do which is quite rare these days!

I only came off in May, having been on pretty much since October 2005. Had to leave my job before that after got attacked while doing my bar shift. Finished the night, and was in next morning, just got to me a little. That, and my paranoid boss accusing me of stealing from the till (not true), CCTV footage of me being attacked mysteriously disappearing by the day after it happened, and just complete shit management.
If I hadn't have left though, I wouldn't have gone to an evening course and re-trained, hence not being able to get my current job as a Student Finance Officer with West Sussex.
Downside being, that job has a maximum of 3 years, despite me enjoying it. Tony Blair decided he wants to shut down our department and move it to Darlington...
