I have been thinking for some time that a lot of smaller raves/clubs don't have lasers and that it would create more visually interesting events if smaller raves/clubs had this type of attraction.

So, my idea was, would these smaller event organisers be prepared to hire such equipment (and a techy) if the price was right???

Because I am considering offering such a service for raves/clubs up to 800-1000 capacity.

What do you guys 'n gals think about my idea???

James.

Well, I was thinking of something like this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Brandnew-300mw-Pro-Green-Laser-Light-Show-ILDA-DMX_W0QQitemZ140005671813QQihZ004QQcategoryZ14984QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

Or maybe this (if I can stretch that far!!!):

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=001&item=110012305808&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

This last one would work out a fair amount of £££ once all the VAT and duty etc has been paid and would prolly be too bright for a small club.

But the first one looks nice.

I just wonder how much a club would pay for hiring such a system for a night.

Any plans to get back into producing full time? I'm sure Vibes would welcome you back

Hello... here is something I know about.

I build my own lasers and did exactly this for 3 years in Japan, made a little money but I got to the point where I had to decide whether I wanted to do it professionally or not as I was getting really big jobs and tours (I actually toured New York with a famous Japanese singer). When your professional you need to start buying backup parts and lasers because the promotor of the show doesn't want to hear that your laser isn't working.

These lasers are on Ebay are for a reason, they are using cheap parts, High Speed 20 PPS Scanner with a "30 Degree Scanning Angle" is really crap. If you are doing a show in a small club and you have a 30 degree scan angle then your not going to be showing much. You need something with at least 45 degrees, you can get scanners upto 70 degrees but they cost around 1500 pounds just for the scanners.

The colour laser is using two laser heads, a blue / green laser and a red laser, while this is not really a problem a white laser is a better option as you can get 16 million colours from it instead of RGB colour. And you have less parts to break.

Depends on what type of kit you want, if you want something simple you can use some sort of hardware controlled device but your biggest expense is the controller, you really need a computer controlled device to do serious shows and not to look boring after 20 mins, computer controllers start from 1000 dollars to 50,000 dollars. The reason I recommend computer control devices is that you can make your own graphics and beams, if you don't you have to use pre set patterns which get super boring after 20 mins.

So I guess your asking what did I use?

I owned two lasers:
First one:
120m Watt blue / green glass plasma laser with catweazle scanners running full auto lite software.

Second one:
300m watt green YAGG laser with analogue blanking, Cambridge scanners running full auto software.

I used to operate:
2 watt YAGG laser with analogue blanking Cambridge scanners running DSP (ohh baby!)

Various 150m watt systems.

You also need miles of cables!

Thanks for the advice silver. It has made me think twice about the quality side of things (made in china 'n all that) however, I just won't be laying my hands on 20+ grand anytime soon, but damn, the spec of the 2watt laser that you used sounds mouthwatering

Just a couple of questions though, do you think this 600mw RGY laser:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/600Mw-RGY-Colorful-Graphical-Beams-Club-Laser_W0QQitemZ110011659576QQihZ001QQcategoryZ29944QQcmdZViewItem
Will have enough power/brightness for getting started out, or would I be wasting my money...

Or would it be cheaper to build my own???

As far as using a PC/latop to control the laser, is there any type of standard interface that I could use like USB, or will I have to buy something specific?

Thanks, James.

600mwatt is overkill dude, you also need to check the law in the UK, I think the maximum you can have is 500mwatt by law or without a special license or something. I'm not 100% sure. That laser is NOT 600mwatt, it is 300mwatt, it is a DPSS YAGG laser which produces a brighter beam but technically it is not 600 it is only 300, a 300mwatt YAGG looks around 400mwatt's to the naked eye. It does have a 40 degree scan angle which could be modded if you open the box, but that is upto you.

If you get 600mwatt you need to find someone that is willing to pay for a 600mwatt, most small club just want a "laser" and a 200mwatt YAGG will do you just fine for that.

You will also need to make sure the clubs have a smoke machine, talk to the lighting operator and organise some sort of laser only part of the night. I recommend you do 20mins on 20-30mins off, otherwise because of the brightness of the laser people start to get tired eyes.

Nothing works via USB dude, you need custom cards to run the software, software that outputs 65,000 movement a second, USB, firewire can't handle that, you need a custom card or DSP unit which runs on standard ethernet and is MIDI controllable (you control the laser with a keyboard or anything midi). You wont be able to afford that so you will have to go fixed hardware solution (very limited) or cheap computer control, around 2000 dollars.

There is another solution, you could talk to laser rental companies and rent their equipment, develop a trust with them and show them you know what your doing and how to set it up. You might have to go out with them a few times to learn what to do but you could make money from laser operation.

Damn I want to get into lasers again now!

Im going to make a 1 gigawatt lazer, that will cut holes in things. And you will be able to like cut pictures in stuff and shoot down aircraft.

Also you know those lazer zone games, we can fit 1 gigawatt lasers to the guns so it really becomes fun.

1 giga watt? you would need a nuclear reaction to power that sucker, I'm not kidding either.

or 1.21 giga watts? Back to the future :)

Thanks again for the input silver. I know what you mean about sellers upping the output power specs to make the product look better. And ebay is probably the biggest culprit for that.

Just one last question. Between these two lasers, which would you choose:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=140005671813&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=004

or this one:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=001&item=110011659576&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

I think that the spec on the RGY one is better, but thought that because these are more on the cheaper scale of things, I might do better with a plain green laser. What do you think?

Thanks a lot for your unbiased help.

James.
