I have noticed this on a lot of cds. How do the Djs cut the songs in half? Are they mixing straight off the vinyl? or...how do most DJs mix cds?

you just mix out of the track into the other track, doesn't matter what medium you're using

Some DJ's simply edit (called a re-edit) the track digitally and then burn it to CD for use in mixes. I tend to do this with hardcore breaks tracks myself.

You mean WHY do they edit the songs?

I suppose that in some cases it may be to fit more tracks in the mix. I've also heard of a few producers that shorten the songs to make it harder for people to rip a specific track and use it.
