a break from listening to a certain genre isn't always a bad thing...I've taken a few months here and there in my life from listening to anything electronic...usually came back to it with a better attitude.

btw, who is this Evan you speak of? =P

Settle down boys and girls - this could be a long one.....

Simon - totally see where you're coming from. I know you're passionate about things (sometimes too much), and i sympathise with you fully. It's been pretty obvious lately that there was a lot of negativity coming from your direction. Whereas i used to see one of your posts and think 'here comes another Sk8SiM special', recently it's been 'shit, what's this tosser going to be ranting on about now'!

Believe me mate, you're not alone in being a bit disillusioned with the 'scene' (god, i hate that word). I've felt similar to you for quite a while now and i must admit, i only buy 50% of the tunes i do because i'm getting a few DJ bookings. I've bought stuff that i've literally played twice and just put to one side. Suppose the main difference is that i still like a lot of the stuff that's coming out where you're having trouble finding ANYTHING worth listening to! If it wasn't for me playing out every few weeks i'd be almost as bad as you! There are plenty of well produced tunes out there, trouble is they have little or no 'soul'. Bit like a chinese meal - fulfilling at the time but you always want another one an hour later!

Now for the section marked 'obligatory mention of different sub genres/smaller labels.

I just KNEW there would be the obvious 'ah, but have you listened to TnC/Lethal Theory/RFU etc etc...' reply (funnily enough, i knew it'd come from Loz too)! Well i have, and i love the situation where we have loads of fresh labels/talent out there. Just one minor point though....

THEY'RE RELEASING EFF ALL!!!!

I know money is a big factor in small labels being able to release stuff. I also know that my refusal to embrace the digital revolution is my own downfall, but, as a DJ i rely on being able to buy tunes that make my sets something different. Trouble is, i can't get anything chuffing different! My mixes at home are varied because i also use CD's with lots of nice unsigned/unreleased stuff. EVERY club i have played at in these past 12 months has only had vinyl decks - and i have no desire to set my own CDJ up for every other twat to mess with! I consider myself a raver first, and a DJ second - so the days i only turn up at clubs to play a set and piss off home after are still a long way away!

You say you've been waitibg for things to get better. I think it's 50/50 at the minute - part of me sees the talent coming through and thinks 'things are looking good', the rest of me thinks 'too little too late'. There are so many people who are totally pissed off with how things are - mainly because of the formulaic sound that's crept into most of the big labels. That would explain the increased interest in breakbeat/gabber etc. Obviously, these are still fairly small scenes (in a wider sense) but i do like the 'underground' feel to them. I have no problems with the big players sticking to a formula, as long as people are aware that there are also alternatives. I'm sure there are plenty of people who will be disgusted by the Hardcore heaven awards results, bet there are plenty who agree with em though!

We could say 'ah, but why don't we educate people to make them aware of the alternatives'? I tend to give people more credit than to just assume they don't know better than to listen to Raverbaby tunes and nothing else. maybe they HAVE listened to other stuff but just don't like it!

So don't think you're alone. The scene needs a bit of a shake up, maybe then the big names will see the hordes of new talent sneaking up behind them, raise their game - and put us all at rest for another year before we go through it all again!

Just keep hold of that passion you have mate, it'll get you far

are there any artists nowadays who still produce the same oldschool happy hardcore + gabba basslines, and those killer oldschool sounding tunes with pianos etc?

Yep.

Cant be doing with the underlining and the change of font size. You also use 500 words when 10 will do. You make up stupid genre names like "funcore".

There is variety out there you just have to wait for it to be released. If you dont like the current sound then why on earth are you buying HH4.

Anyway its only about a week to Flute is released on KFA. That will put a smile on your face.

there are producers out there doin exciting things with hardcore!
take "gammer & whizzkid - scream" for example; brilliant tune! real get up n stomp like a mofo kinda stuff! it doesnt fit exactly into the current "formula for success" as a lot of other popular tunes do, and it does hav a lil something different in there!
imo too many ppl are putting too much emphasis into robbie long/stormtrooper sounding tunes. sure they are lotsa fun, but i think a lil adaptation across the board (in the cheesy stuff, as well as everything else) will make other sub-genres more enjoyable!
tbh i dont care is there are vocals singing on about true love, stapling a cat to the door, or anything else for that matter. i just wanna hear good sounding, fun HAPPY & ENJOYABLE hardcore!

lol i wouldnt expect perfection from unfinished works either. just something good to listen to and that i can rant about and maybe give some feedback on n hopefully hear a finished product of later :P

I understand what you mean sk8sim, i've felt like this a while now I might hear the odd tune that stands out. The thing is, are you looking in all the right areas. There are producers that are doing all sorts of tunes. The big name dj's are not going to change the style and I really do not like producers that have there "own style". I love making my own tunes because I want creativity, something different. When i start a track I never use a preset style. To be honest the best songs I hear are actually from here and ush. Ionosphere, the Deviant etc and yourself. I love the KFA label and Mertwax. A lot of cool tunes that come out like this. I just wish I could find more then I wouldn't have this feeling aswell. I really really wish they would start banging out some piano tunes though. Something about piano's makes me happy :)

Maybe you just have a break from hardcore and you'll find when you listen again you will gain a bit more interest. Sad to hear you are leaving though =[
