Hey now! I still call it Happy Hardcore. You can hear the the early trance sounds in some of Sharkey's tracks on Bonkers 1 & 2. And those are from '96 & '97.

Well they were Trancecore not happy hardcore.. the happy hardcore was on Hixxy's mix

Shakey's mix on Bonkers 1 was mainly Happy Hardcore, I dont think Froce & Styles' "Wonderland" is a trancecore track..or "Rainbow Islands" or "Bonkers Anthem", but his Bonkers 2 mix had more of the trancecore sound to it.

Yeah Trancecore is pretty far away soundwise from Trance, the only thing they share is a 4/4 kick, oh and the name Trance.

BTW, Rainbow Island, wicked tune. (Wouldn't that fall under the GBT lable)

Most of the early Freeform (96-98) was quite Tecjno influenced. It wasn't really until 1999 Sharkey called it Freeform. His mixes on both Bonkers 1 and 2 have a Happy Hardcore feel about them but more less cheesy than Hixxy's mixes. When Dougel joined on Bonkers 3 he was Happy Hardcore while Shareky tried out the then new 'Freeform' sounds. Alot of Bonkers 7 is Freeform yet you can hear how times have moved on since then.

Jungle is complex, as Jungle (or Jungle Techno as it was known then) was around in 1991/92 as a name too. It was more applied to the heavy bass breakbeat sound, compared to the rave/techno-riff breakbeat sounds. At a guess, if anything by 1994, more people picked up on the Jungle term, and likely assumed it was the starting point.

does anyone think early hardcore was angry and intimidating to some? nothing to do with quality etc, just in your face love it or hate it. i'm thinking it's morphing into 'beauty and the beast' with a lot of quality female vocals, with their innocent driving effects, contrasted with the traditional pulsating hardcore arrangement. something for everyone? do we embrace change? there's not enough commercial hardcore fans replying on the forum so i'm expecting your wrath on a biblical scale!!.....

Drum and Bass split from Jungle in 1996

They have never really split. As the Ragga influence declined in '95 then more people started calling it Drum & Bass (rather than Jungle) but it was still the same scene. Jungle is still used today to refer to more ragga influenced D&B.

Jungle D&B evolved from the darkside hardcore that appeared in 1993. It was DJs who kept playing the more uplifting or happy tunes who kicked off the separate Happy Hardcore scene. The big raves of the 90's where both Hardcore & Drum & Bass were played together were the best events. A variety of beats and no moodiness!

Regga Jungle Is still around today Drum & Bass is its own thing and even has its own sub genres in today world... (Thank f*ck too, cuse some dnb is shockingly shite compaired to some of the flawless talent in the scene!)

Nope. Old Skool would be called Old Skool or Old Skool Breakbeat, and Jungle would be much more likely to refer to Old Skool then Drum & Bass.

Ambient Jungle? Atmospheric (Drum & Bass) I know it as if your referring to the style LTJ Bukem pioneered "the good looking sound". I have never heard the term "Disco Jungle" - sounds like a pisstake to me, I definetly know it as "Liquid Funk" (High Contrast, Logistics .etc.)
