mp3 software mixing on laptop where do i start.

I keep reading alot about people mixing on computer i am a vinyl freak much to the dismay of my missus ha ha, i was off work for 3 days sick in bed but thanks to the joys of wireless internet and a laptop i spent over 200 quid on vinyl, anyway back to subject i have a samsung x20 laptop i want to know what i need to do to be able to do a few mixes on it, how do i listen to cue in head phone but still have live audio ?

depending on your choice of dj-software, its depends on what kind of audio setups is has.

some prop can only work if you have 2 soundcards, but to my knowledge, both VirtualDJ and Traktor (3?) can use a "stereo" splitter (which means you splitt left/right into 2 different channels, i left for output and right for the 'quiet zone')

later versions of VirtualDJ (which sucks in general :( ) also has a function that allows you to use a surround system for a 2nd output

To do it properly you need to get a 4 channel soundcard.

A number are available, either USB, Firewire or PCMCIA card.

A good and well used card is the Echo Indigo DJ PCMCIA card. You then map left deck to channel 1+2 and right to 3+4 - thus giving you proper stereo output on each one.

Alternatively, if you don't want to use an external mixer, map 1+2 to master and 3+4 to cue.
