I'm trying to produce a track for my mate (not dance music) and was wondering:
A - If anyone had any good drum samples for such a track. Everything I find seems to sound tosh.
B - If anyone had any general tips for producing non-dance music.
It's a guitar, male vocal track... Couldn't really fit it in a genre tbh. I'm sure it would go in one but my knowledge in that area is limited.
Any help whatsoever greatly appreciated.

I don't have any samples of real drum sounds, but i could try and make some for you when i use the studio at college on the 4th of December if you wish.
I would say follow the same principles as with electronic music, after all, it's still music all the same, the only difference is your used to using electronic instruments.
I can't think of any tips that i know really, but this should be very usefull:
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/apr00/articles/arrangingpop.htm For real music though the drums are generally recorded together at once by the drummer. It's not quite the same when using single samples of drums to make the drum section, it's doable but much harder to make sound realistic (unless your not using real drum sounds for the sake of sounding like the real thing, as opposed to just using them for the tonality of them). I have to write/produce a few songs with real instruments for college actually, which i love the idea of :)

Cheers guys.
Yeah that seems to make sense H2G. I suppose it would be very difficult to try and achieve the human imperfections you would get from recording someone playing.
Problem is neither of us can play the drums... :s Not much help really. So we probably have more chance of trying to get something that sounds good using samples or a drum machine or whatever.
For now we are really just having some fun anyway, nothing serious. If you wanted to make some drum sounds at college and it's not too much trouble that'd be great :) I could send you the guitar recording if you like to give you an idea of the sort of sound we are trying to achieve.
Will check the links when I get home from work :)

bulby your using FL right?
Why not load up the bulit in VST Drum snyth - "FPC!"
You punch it all in using the piano roll!
You get your kick, snare, toms, rides ect
It has some great presets too ;) but to get the realistic sound! you want to sort out your valoacity!
e.g. you want the snare hit to be LOUD and make other snares lower for fills and what not!
The best one going around would be battary (or something) i don't use it, but i've seen it in use on some tutiroals...
Anyways... its basiclly the real thing mate :) just takes a little while to get used to cuse now your not just slaping sounds together... your punching notes in, and making sure everything is at its right voulme!
Thats how you get the "real" effect when it comes to drum! you need to think about how a drummer plays his instrument... certain hits are lighter... therefore, you need to change the volume on them hits!
^^^ see normally you wouldn't think that made much diffrence... but when it comes to drums, its everything! lol
Hope that helps mate

I can help you out with some drum samples, Reason has quite a few kits which are multi-sampled, snares and hi-hats and othe stuff (different timbres on repeated hits for realism). I'll sample them out for you if you want them.

hardware like Roland MC-505 / MC-909 always sounds better than software samples, and easier to use.
If you have enough money, get a Roland MC-909, you'll have a very good time in playing it.
