Being desperate doesn't really convince promoters.
Especially saying the reason they should is that you've booked yourself in the past.
I'm in Canada so maybe it's dfferent in the UK... But the best advice I can give you is to go to as many local events and hand the promoters mix CDs. If your mix is good, and you show that you support their events, promoters will want to book you.
I'm a promoter in Canada so I don't know how much that'll apply though...

When your trying to get a promoter to book you, treat it like a professional, because in the end its all business for him. You are trying to sell yourself and prove to him that having you onboard will create a positive impact on his reputation therefor, increase ticket sales.
Presentation of yourself is most important ;)
