I really want to start mixing, but I do not know what setup to buy.
As a result of being only 16, funds are low.
A lot of posters on here say "anything but Technics are shyte" as regards vinyl, and "anything but Pioneers are shyte" as regards CDJs. Is this really true?
I only want to start mixing as a hobby, as I'm passionate for the music, where do I start? Please help!

those are the what most people use so that's whats going to be in all the clubs/venues.
you can just buy a set of cheap direct drives to start with, see if you like it or not...but chances are you will and you'll want to upgrade to better decks and then you'll be mad that you spent your money on cheaper decks =P
I like the vestax pdx's, numark ttx's and techic 12's...as long as the motor has enough torque for the slipmat to work you should be in bussiness...of course you could always buy some butter rugs for extra slip

Technics pretty much set the standard for decks 30 years ago, but there are plenty of other good ones out there. Be sure to get direct drive (as opposed to belt drive). You may even be able to find a pair of used Technics for a decent price, so shop arond.
As far as CDJ's go, the Pioneer CDJ-1000 is about as good as you're going to get. I'm sure that there are tons of cheaper models that can handle basic mixing just fine. Again, shop around and see what's out there.
Try and find a good balance between quality and price.

man if your low on funds do wat i did and shop around for 2nd hand or end of stock ect you can get some killer deals man eg i bought a stanton c.303 for only $250 aus b4 the c.313 was brought out btw and recently i just bought a gemini ps-04 for only $150 worth at rrp $800aus (sells at $700 aus) and that mixer was new it was an end of stock model and it came with 12month warrenty. if you can i would suggest buying stanton c.314 der the bomb but beside dat it may take some time and i mean some time eg it took me lyk a year -half a year to buy my set up but if you are as passionate as you say you are then you can make it. And don't beleive that you can't do it cause i could and im 16 aswell lol and i had kno job really just worked for my dad lol

Cheers guys, you've really helped!
I'll do some more shopping around and see what I can find; while keeping in mind what you said.
Any more information or advice appreciated.

I would be interested to know what equipment DJs on happyhardcore.com use.
As this would be helpful guidance in my quest to become a DJ.

PDX2000, PCV175. All good, but they are a bit worn now! Solid and reliable turntable with loads of torque, it has some neat features but to be honest they are not important. The 175 also does the job well, it's a really solid build with no shitty cheap plastic components, it's old and battered and still no crackle, nice sounding mixer too. With a mixer go for quality build, don't piss about with a beatkeeper and a billion realtime FX and all that, personally I consider that to be waste of money unless you spend at least 600 quid (UK). As said above mate, you MUST get direct drive that is the golden rule - might be worth having a few goes on a mate's decks first until you can basically get two tunes in time, then think about wether you are willing to save for the big boys (technics/vestax) or just go for sommat cheaper. Here's another tip - if you can already get two tunes in time from practising with a mate's decks, go into a shop with two records and HAVE A MIX. Any decent shop will et you compare the Vestax and the Technics for yourself. You can always THEN order online if you find it to be cheaper. LET US KNOW WHAT YOU DECIDE TO GO FOR. :)
