friend of mine got a pair of these : http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Alesis-Monitor-1-MKII-Passive-Monitors-Pair?sku=603201

he's having a problem, wondering if any of you guys can help as I really have no idea...

quote:
basically, i got a pair of studio monitors hoping to plug my USB module into it since it has two line-outs (left and right), but turns out these are unpowered, and all they have is one dual-banana input each.

i believe the standard way to hook these up would be to have the line-ins go to a power amp, and connect the power amp to the monitors via the banana cables (correct me if i'm wrong on this one)? however, it has come to my attention that there are standard low-impedance > banana cables out there, would they work just plugging them in directly, or are they completely worthless without power from an amp? i'm using them indoors so i really don't need them to be that loud for now.

thanks in advance

If they aren't powered, you need an amp, period.

yeah, he definately needs an amp if they're passive

You should generally not buy passive studio monitors because unless you have big bucks to spend on customizing a crossover to your setup and a high end amp they'll never be as good as an active studio monitor in the same price range. This is due to the custom built crossover and dual amps found in most active studio monitors...
