Alright =)
I am not a DJ; but, I do want to learn how to DJ. I am picking it up for fun and do not expect to get any money out of it. The only problem is, I don't know anyone who DJs, or has turntables. So, I cannot try theirs out to see if I like it. So, I am kind of taking a big risk here.

Anyways, I have a few questions that I could use some answers to, to help me get started.

After reading a lot, and talking to quite a few people, it seems that Vinyl is the best choice for DJing. And after more research the best tables for the money would be "Technics 1200". (any disagreements here?) I've heard that they keep their resell value nicely.

What I don't know, is where to buy vinyl. I want to mix happyhardcore..so a nice hardcore vinyl site would be nice =) IS there like a supersite for all of this stuff or something? I haev found a few sites, but none of them look real and/or have good music.

What should I do for a mixer? I don't know what any of the EQ/audio/FX things are, or what they do. So I am not quite sure if I am getting ripped off or not.

Amps? Apparently it is good to have amps. I would rather just have only headphones so that no one in the house kills me (I just turned 18, I still live at home <highschool>).
Also, how would I go about hooking this stuff into my computer so that I can record the audio that I make? Do I need special hardware, or cords or something?

And, the big question. How much should I expect to pay for a full setup like this? After checking around on ebay, it seems that I can get 2 technics for about $500.00; which isn't too bad. How much would be added if I were to get a decent mixer, headphones, enough starting vinyl, and whatever is needed to get the audio to my comptuer?

That's all I can think of =P Sorry about the long post with all the questions. I am just trying to make sure I do this right.

Thanks!

Technics for sure! Industry standard there mate you can not go wrong!

Personnaly i have stopped buying vinyl and i am in the process of selling all of mine, i have got SSL (rane & serato scratch live) google it!

Juno records, beatport and many other places sell high quallity mp3's or wave files. These are normally about £1.50 so it works out alot cheaper. Obviosly you could just d/l crap rips from all the p2p programs or usenet these are ok for in your bedroom but if you get good and get a gig you will need better quality rips.

The EQ's are simple, bass mid treble very handy for mixing. ie. When mixing and just bringing a tune in you can have the bass down on the tune coming in and gradully be raising it makes for smother mixing

FX are simple as well, the are just good sound effects not really needed but good to have! 1 point about mixers with these in the pioneer and other top of the line stuff the effect have a processor which works out when the echo or what other effect you are using IF YOU BUY A CHEAP MIXER YOU WILL NEED TO DO THIS URSELF!! To get that sound right yourself is near impossible!

Amp is not needed as long as you have AUX input on your hifi you are good to go!

Recording on to you computer is easy and there is many free programs available, no special wire is required i had one in my house but if you do not £2 will be more than enough

Can't help with price as i am in the UK, but the dearer the better!

Buy cheap equipment and i would bet as soon as you get in to djing you will want better! So rather than waste money on crap just buy good!

Anymore help needed either post here mate or PM me i'll be glad to help

Thanks bud =)

That brought on a few more questions.

What do you mean by this? You can use CDs on a record player? Why would you not need vinyl with turntables? confused me =/

Thanks again for the help! Any suggestions on a good brand/model of a mixer?

I found this on ebay =)

http://cgi.ebay.com/2-Technics-SL-1200-MK2-turntable-set-w-Pioneer-mixer_W0QQitemZ230105513589QQcategoryZ64448QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

What do you think?

The turntables are like $500 a piece...the mixer is $300 by itself and the headphones are $75. Total: $1,375; but, I can get all of it in that EBAY auction for ~$500. I think I'm going to bid on it

If I where you I wouldn't go blowing all that cash on decks if your not sure your going to enjoy mixing. It's pretty frustraiting at first, so if I where you I'd buy some cheapish decks and try it out first, then, if you enjoy it, you'd have had time to save up the money again to splash out on some a top quality setup.

Most people say that wasting money on crap decks is going to waste more money than spending them on nice ones. Like the Technics keep a lot of their resell value..so if I get them from ebay (2) for 400, I could sell them again easily for 400.

I bought a belt drive package for about £200 and within 6 months I wanted to upgrad and spent about £550 on new dex. £200 wasted because I couldn't sell them for anywhere near that amount.

If I were you I'd get the Technics and just hope you like djing

This isnt a dig but for years before i got decks in my head i new i wanted to mix, was a cash thing why i couldnt and as soon as i was old enough and had coin i got them.

If you have doubts it doesnt mean you'll not get it or love it, but i cant understand spendin a lotta money unless in your mind you no its something you want to do.

You dont need a shot of other peoples decks to no you want to do it, is just somethin you appreciate and want to combine new ideas and different tracks together.

Music in general is the best hobby you can have imo, but i dont get why you think you might not enjoy it.

Anyway all best if you do get it, i love vinyl myself and technics and even though i really want final scratch or serato it wouldnt make me sell my vinyl when i get one of them. For shops if you like uk stuff this site and imos store are the same and have most the new releases, nu energy also got a good variety.

If you like bangin hardcore then should go to phuturerave or sector1.

For the classics use forums like this and ush, ebay and discogs are your best places.

Enjoy mixin anyway, dont want to seem negative but you should think positive about it and less of the "dunno if its for me"

When i said selling them all i kinda lied, off course i will always keep the classics and all the rare promos and whitelabels

But the restof the crap straight on discogs and wow there is some stupid f*ckers on that!

I had double copies of alot of tracks and some of the cash i have got for them is shocking

dj isaac - nobody like techno £25
dj duco - in your head £25
dave 202 - global trance £20

the list just go's on and on

at first i just started listing my vinyl on there as in my collection then one day i was bored so thought i'll put some up for sale everything i listed for sale was priced a bit on the high side even the crap i bought from HMV at 3 for £10 i have been selling for £8

i have not been selling loads every week but in the last 6 months i have took an easy £500 just from discogs

And i have some advice for u 2 mate, do not go with FS i had v1.5 and v2 believe me SSL works so much better, however i think after the inital bugs in the software are fixed torq might be up there!

@Cynosure

if you go on youtube search for serato at NAMM, they are showing of version 1.8 (Free d/l when its realased) YOU CAN MIX VIDEO!!!!

scratch live is expensive =(

Hard to see that it, plus the price of MP3s is less expensive than buying vinyls. I won't buy it now..maybe later down the road if I like it..right now I'll just buy a few records a week or something =P

I am waiting for the end of that auction, hopefully it doesnt go over $500 and I win it =/
