How are you today? Any gigs on the weekend?
Hey mate. Busy as usual. Working the day job at the record store and producing in the evening. This weekend on the Friday night I have a gig down in Adelaide (South Australia) and the Saturday night back in Brisbane.
How did you get into the scene, and how old were you then?
I was exposed to a lot of early euro hardcore from my cousin when I was about 12, around 1995. I was 15 when I went to my first rave. It was lucky working at the record store that young. They used to sneak me into the raves. I already had turntables by this stage and was belting a lot of hard house.
When, and where was your first gig?
My first gig was in 2002 @ System 6 with Scott Brown, Sharkey & Kevin Energy headlining. I was lucky enough to have Sharkz MC my set.
What kind of styles do you play and listen to?
I am mostly well known for playing various styles of hardcore, mostly freeform. I also have a residency at a bar where I play a lot of downbeat/hip hop and jazz. I have been playing a few psy trance sets out lately as well. Having loads of fun with that. I love being diverse with my music. It always keeps it fresh.
What are your favourite labels and djs? Who had the biggest influence on you?
On the hardcore front my favourite labels (some no longer running) would have to be: Digital Beats/z, Bonkers/z, Electronic, Nu Energy and Kaotik. I love pure, fast paced and meaningful freeform. The Ephexis boys have been an amazing influence on my style of recent times. These guys are unbelievable producers and working with them in the studio has taught me a lot. Sharkey helped me a lot to get going on the producing side of things when I first started writing music.
Which producers do you work with?
I work mostly alongside Whispa, under the name ‘C.O.A’ This is our live PA. I have also worked alongside AMS and the Ephexis boys
When did you start writing music?
I started writing music with Whispa around 2002. We were writing mostly hardcore, breaks and some downbeat stuff. But now we mostly write freeform for our live PA.
What was your first official release?
My first official release is the next Nu Energy NUNRG064. A 3-track collaboration EP with Ephexis. Ive got another lined up on AMS’s label “Switched on.”
Around September this year C.O.A will be starting our own hardcore label “Outta Limits” We’ve got loads of banging freeform lined up for it.
Where do you dj regularly nowadays?
I play at all the raves in my hometown plus interstate a number of times each year. I’ve got a monthly residency at Australia’s top club ‘Family’ Which I close out the main room their. Plus my residency playing downbeat and lounge.
How is the scene in Australia?
The scene in Australia is ****in rockin!! For my music I love playing in my hometown Brisbane and down in Adelaide. This is defiantly where the freeform is pumping here. I find the Sydney parties are playing a lot of happy hard down there. The parties are getting good numbers aswell.
What do you use to write music? (hardware, software)
I sequence everything through Logic. I use both hardware and vsti’s. I’ve got a Korg Triton Rack for those lush pads n strings and I couldn’t do without my Virus Powercore.
Which one was your best party as a dj?
Hmmm toooo hard to choose…
Which is your best track in your opinion?
I’d have to say the C.O.A Collab “Invasion” We’ll be releasing this on our label ‘Outta Limits’ later this year
What do you think of the scene? Do you think it's heading the right direction?
To be honest the freeform scene is really lacking at the moment. A lot of quality artists aren’t producing quality freeform any more. It seems a lot of “happier” styles are being made at the moment. There is still a lot of great talent around such as, Ephexis, Arkitech, Electronic Records, AC Slater and the FINRG boys. This is one of the drives behind us starting our label this year. We will be pushing quality freeform from the Australian shores.
What's your future plans?
I’m well under way in getting C.O.A’s label up at the moment. We are also looking at starting an Australian collective of hard dance producers. This should hopefully be up and running this year. Writing lots of banging hardcore!!
Do you plan to visit Hungary and maybe play here?
Defiantly mate. I hope to be back in Europe towards the end of this year and will defiantly have to stop through Hungary
What do you think of Hungary (as you are of Hungarian origin)? Do you know the scene here?
I didn’t know that the hardcore got played in Hungary until only recently. I can’t wait to check it out. I played in Finland last December and the crowds were amazing. So I’m definitely keen to check out the Hungarian crowd. It will be great to visit some relatives there also.
Thank you for the interview!
