I've done no research, but I'd hazard that if you are coming from a pc, and your sony was formated for pc, going to a mac is a problem. Powerbooks have software that allow them to be pc-compatible, so see if you can't find that and try again through that program. otherwise you might be sol unless a pc-based friend lets you burn your cds.

Right, well...I know Sony makes Mac-only syncing products for the PSP. Like iPSP.
You might want to check a special mac page of the Sony website. Or, if it's just a regular mp3 player, it should be compatible with iTunes...at least it should show up as a disk in Finder.
Drivers don't exist for Mac OS X, if anything it would just be an application.
When you plug in your mp3 player, open Disk Utility (Applications>>Utilites>>Disk Utility) and see if it's recognizing the mp3 player at all. Try mounting it.
If all fails, buy a new mp3 player...maybe an iPod.

Sorry mate, Sony doesn't have any programs for Mac's, and I dont think their's a way to transfer the tracks manually since the files are quickly converted to sony's own format and are placed in a very specific way

^^ I thought Sony had dropped the force ATRAC3 use? Anyway if you can connect it to your laptop as a external storage, just drag and drop the tunes there and check if they work. Otherwise, try to install virtual PC to your mac, and run the program under that. Then theres that:

If its how Samination said it is, it only recons ATRAC files, thus it doesnt find the files, though note that the files have to be in the folder, where the programs used to put the files to. Sony has advertised its players a lot by being mp3 players and saying they play mp3's. So i find it very strange if it didnt work as it was advertised. Though it also may be that it uses an index file, which is made by the Sony software.

What's happening is the mp3 player can't find the songs. What you should do is download the application TinkerTool. Run it and tell it to show hidden and system files in Finder. After doing this, you should be able to see any hidden folders that Sony has crammed in your mp3 player.
I know for the iPod it's very strangely organized, but I'm not sure about the Sony thing. Just see if you can find any Music subdirectories in the mp3 player. If you can, try putting the songs there and see if it works.
Unfortunately, it sounds like it needs to be in that specific format Samination mentioned.
Try using this to convert your mp3's to .oma's. It may or may not work...

Been checking around various forums...there is no converter for mac from mp3 to .oma (which is the ATRAC3 file format extension)....

Right that model of sony mp3 player will only play files that are transferred using the sony software. The player can also be used as a storage device which is why you could drag items onto it but it wont play them.
The player can play mp3, atrac and wma. It may need a firmware upgrade to play wma depending on its age.

As far back as I can remember Sony have always tried to thwart people's freedom to transfer music/video etc in this way
and therefore effectively force them into using only Sony products....
Yeh, save up and get an iPhone.
